APPOINTMENT NOTICE
I am proud to announce the appointment of Wendy Metcalfe as the new Editor-in-Chief of the Toronto Sun effective July 29, 2013, reporting to me. For the past year Wendy has been Sun Media's regional content director of the Niagara and Southern Ontario region and since 2011 has served as editor-in-chief of the St. Catharines Standard newspaper and website. In that role she has been a digital innovator. She played a major role in a task force that rolled out a redesign for regional websites and implemented a major newspaper redesign. As a result, the readership of websites in her region has seen significant growth. During her stewardship her group has had numerous wins and nominations in the National Newspaper Awards, Ontario Newspaper Awards and Sun Media Awards. Wendy, a graduate of the University of Western Ontario, who also studied journalism at Humber College, comes by her tab sensibilities honestly. The Burlington native cut her teeth in tabloids in the U.K., as a reporter and in a variety of managerial roles over a decade, including what was then Scotland's largest circulation daily, the Daily Record. It was Wendy's love of sports, basketball in particular, that landed her first role in journalism, as a teenager reporting on sports for a local TV show in Ontario. In Scotland she played basketball in the women's national league before hanging up her jersey to concentrate on a more challenging activity - being a mom of two. James Wallace, the current editor-in-chief, has announced his decision to leave The Sun, so I want to take this opportunity to thank him for his significant contributions over the years and wish him well in the future.
