Marcy Roberts UNE 742 Strategy Demonstration Module 2

Readers are frequently frustrated when they meet unfamiliar words as they read. Jumping up and grabbing a dictionary takes time and wrests readers out of the text. Asking the teacher can be time consuming as well. One of the quickest and most effective ways of dealing with unfamiliar vocabulary is through

Jot Thoughts And One Stray

Jot Thoughts: At the onset of the lesson, students will participate in an activity called Jot Thoughts. In groups of 46 students will rip a sheet of paper into 8 pieces. Students write strategies used to figure out unfamiliar words, say it aloud and throw it in the middle of the table. This is done popcorn style so students do NOT have to participate, yet they benefit from hearing others. One Stray: After 3-5 minutes, student count off 1-4. Teacher randomly chooses number_. Number _ strays to a another group and shares 3 strategies raised in their group

Before reading the paper, introduce context clues by sharing this Power Point found in Slide Share. Stop often, having partners debrief the content frequently. Or, have pairs summarize each slide with 1-2 sentences. Partner A summarizes one slide then B does the next. This holds them accountable for listening, speaking, and reading.

Use a Smart Board or document camera to model highlighting unfamiliar terms.

Provide 2 sticky notes for each student. Have students choose two unfamiliar words to highlight (you can preplan the articles depending on student abilities).

You can choose one article that everyone will read and highlight all unfamiliar words (short articles are good for this activity). This is an article my class read from the Teens & Twenties page in our local newspaper. Bold terms were highlighted by most students.

College a time to balance work, fun

College is a milestone and a very exciting time, too. It also can be an extremely frightening time, as well. Depending on the distance away from home, you can be dealing with being separated from family and friends. As humans, we typically dont enjoy even slight change, so being forced into a completely foreign environment can be a scary experience. I know college will have moments that are frightening, stressful and embarrassing. But I also know that college is a huge learning experience that allows you to get the benefits of what you put into it. Dont be shy. Like the old Christmas song goes, say hello to friends you know and everyone you meet. I also expect there to be a lot more work than what was required in high school. I never studied in high school and still got straight As. College will require much more time and effort, and it is essential to learn how to budget time efficiently. College is a fun time. But always remember why youre there to get an education. Learn how to use time effectively and wisely. But dont spend all of your time cramped in your dorm room. Balance fun with work and success should not be an issue. Author: CJ Click is a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Teens & Twenties writer. Burlington Times News

The teacher facilitates and monitors definitions. Once the table is complete, students can play BINGO. Each word is written twice on the board, spread all over board Team captain reads the inferred definition and any student calls the word, if agreed they can cover one word with a chip. When a winner calls BINGO they not only share their covered words but must share the definition too.
