Readers are frequently frustrated when they meet unfamiliar words as they read. Jumping up and grabbing a dictionary takes time and wrests readers out of the text. Asking the teacher can be time consuming as well. One of the quickest and most effective ways of dealing with unfamiliar vocabulary is through
Jot Thoughts: At the onset of the lesson, students will participate in an activity called Jot Thoughts. In groups of 46 students will rip a sheet of paper into 8 pieces. Students write strategies used to figure out unfamiliar words, say it aloud and throw it in the middle of the table. This is done popcorn style so students do NOT have to participate, yet they benefit from hearing others. One Stray: After 3-5 minutes, student count off 1-4. Teacher randomly chooses number_. Number _ strays to a another group and shares 3 strategies raised in their group
Before reading the paper, introduce context clues by sharing this Power Point found in Slide Share. Stop often, having partners debrief the content frequently. Or, have pairs summarize each slide with 1-2 sentences. Partner A summarizes one slide then B does the next. This holds them accountable for listening, speaking, and reading.
Provide 2 sticky notes for each student. Have students choose two unfamiliar words to highlight (you can preplan the articles depending on student abilities).
You can choose one article that everyone will read and highlight all unfamiliar words (short articles are good for this activity). This is an article my class read from the Teens & Twenties page in our local newspaper. Bold terms were highlighted by most students.

*The number in teams and the amount of words recorded is flexible. Each student should not record more than two words for time sake.
The teacher facilitates and monitors definitions. Once the table is complete, students can play BINGO. Each word is written twice on the board, spread all over board Team captain reads the inferred definition and any student calls the word, if agreed they can cover one word with a chip. When a winner calls BINGO they not only share their covered words but must share the definition too.

Create practice index cards on www.quizlet.com Have students choose one word and complete a Word Meaning Graphic Organizer (Daniels pg. 138) Students create a PowerPoint creating one page for each word. Each page would include a 3 of the following: synonym, antonym, definition, picture, or sentence.
