Welcome to Ms. Hernandezs 7 Grade English Language Arts Class!

Course Description: In this class you will learn and develop reading, writing, and interpretive skills of literature. We will be looking at a variety of texts including novels, poetry and articles. While reading these texts, students will create discussions, projects, essays in order to grasp a clear understanding of the text. Materials Needed: You will be responsible for bringing the following items to class every day: Pen/pencil Paper Homework (if assigned) Appropriate Text MOST IMPORTANTLY RESPECT You are not required to purchase a dictionary, but it is highly recommended. **Other materials will be announced if needed** Our daily agenda includes: Aim/Instructional Objective Do Now/Initial Activity Lesson

Grades: You are expected to do your best in this class. Your grade will be based on written and spoken proficiency, reading comprehension, tests, quizzes, projects, and your daily class participation, which includes: initial activity, daily homework, being on time to class, and being PREPARED to work. This is your job and you need to take it seriously. By Xaverian protocols 3 Absences = FAILING GRADE 2 Latenesss is considered 1 absence Do Now/Initial Activity: Every day students will complete a five-minute warm-up activity. When students arrive to class, they will sit down and immediately do the activity written on the board or overhead. Be sure to always write the date of the warm-up. Homework: Homework will be given everyday. Homework will range from book-work, to worksheets, to speaking assignments (such as reciting information to parents). A folder will be set up in the front of the room for your completed assignments to be placed at the BEGINNING OF CLASS. This work will be picked up at the end of the day by me and reviewed. Homework that is done according to protocol will be awarded a 3/3. Incomplete work will have points deducted and you will be given the opportunity to make it up.

Class participation: At the end of the week all students are assessed as to their level of class participation. This includes: group work, arriving to class on time, taking out your notebook and pen/pencil and beginning the initial activity, respecting the teacher and each other and absolutely no disruptions before, after and during the lessons. If you are able to accomplish all the above with no reminder from me, you will be awarded a 4/4. Quizzes and Tests: I will be administering tests and quizzes throughout the month. This will include: grammar, listening and reading comprehension and vocabulary. The total score for each assessment may vary. You will be informed of the points prior to the administration of the assessment. Projects: Every quarter students will be required to complete a group or independent project that will be presented in class. The project will be based on a theme or topic for the semester. The projects can be presented in the following formats: PowerPoint, a video, a poster, etc. For each project, students will study a specific topic, research it, present a minimum of 100 word summary discussing their subject, and will give a one-three minute presentation depending on the requirements. Project themes will be discussed in class. The following is extremely important.
