Creation for Conserving our Glorious Past

Introduction In a rapidly transforming situation in todays society, our urban areas are constantly experiencing a severe development pressure. Sometimes these transformations carve an example in architectural domain and sometimes the solutions are a disaster. As the city-society is meant to serve the human beings, the development pattern should also respect the traditional culture. India is a country having varied example of cultural traditions which has a direct impact of its built form especially in urban areas. Indian Architecture is a physical manifestation of its culture which has a glorious past. Architect has the ability to play a key role through their design to intervene such situations where the development pressure tries to absorb the rich cultural tradition through their design interventions. Architectural heritage is a showcase of our rich cultural tradition which should be passed on to the future generation. These heritage resources can be experience in a old commercial spine to a rich heritage residential core in various cities of India. Regeneration of traditional urban area is actually identifying and re-establishing its original resources through conservation and create sustainable economy which was originally present in those areas. The aim of heritage conservation is to ensure that the cultural significance of heritage places is retained for future generations to enjoy. Under the Charter, conservation means all the processes of looking after a place so as to retain its cultural significance. It includes maintenance and may, according to circumstances, include preservation, restoration, reconstruction and adaptation and will commonly be a combination of more than one of these. (Extract from Article 1 Burra Charter). Today Architects should take the challenge to synthesize the traditional knowledge system which still lies behind the dwindling architectural heritage and come up with a sustainable solution through their design which will cater the present need and as well as enhance the significance of the cultural past.

Program Respecting the above discussion, the participating institution is required to select a historic commercial spine which has a rich cultural past housed in any part of a traditional Indian City. The site should also have a major regional significance in present context. Due to the present need and development pressure the character of the spine is dwindling or getting neglected. There could be a possibility of evidence of severe architectural of structural deterioration. Our challenge is to redesign the spine after doing a detail research and documentation of the built heritage and its cultural tradition. The challenge must address these criteria: 1. It should be well documented so that the present architectural evidence can establish its original significance. 2. The redesign should re-establish its cultural significance. 3. The redesign proposal should enhance the visual experience where the rich built heritage features become more prominent. 4. The redesign should consider the sustainability and environment issues. 5. The re-design should resolve the present need. 6. As this redesign is in a heritage area, so it is expected that if there are specific bylaws present, then the design must follow the bylaws. The participants need to select a historic spine which is not more that 500m and the selected stretch must be leading to or starting from a major land mark city open space. The documentation should cover both sides of the street and neighbouring area to establish the original visual character of the Commercial Spine. The participants need to discuss the issues which diminish the heritage character through graphics and able to give solutions for each issue. The present land use should remain unchanged and participants need to mention it in their entries/ sheets.

Judging criteria 1. Rationale for site Selection. 2. Establish and articulate the Significance of the selected area. 3. Importance of the site in local, regional and national context 4. Method of Resource identification of the selected spine and its visual representation. 5. Architectural Documentation quality of the selected stretch in terms of both two dimensional and three dimensional forms. 6. Identification of issues and its visual representation 7. Establishing long term realistic design solution 8. Feasibility of the solution in Indian Context 9. The Quality of Visual and verbal Presentation. 10. Criteria according to individual Jury members or a general score on overall proposal. Each criterion will be marked in a 10 point scale. Submission Requirements: 1. Panel: One 8' x 4' panel will be provided. 2. Presentation: Maximum number of sheets not to exceed 20 A1 (841mm X 594mm) this can either be in single panel format or part panel format Single panel This mode of presentation requires the entire 8' x 4' panel to be covered which would be considered equivalent to 6 A1 sheets. The remaining sheets may be overlaid on the panel. The Shape and size of the overlays on the single panel shall be left to the discretion of the participants subject to each A1 (or part of) being counted as one overlay.

Part Panel This presentation is possible in two forms either covering 2/3rd of the panel or 1/3 rd of the panel. 1. A 2/3rd panel would be considered equivalent to 4 A1 sheets, along with which a maximum of 11 A1 sheets in a calendar and / or overlay format is allowed. 2. A l/3 rd panel would be considered equivalent to 2 Al sheets, along with which a maximum of 13 A1 sheets in a calendar and / or overlay format. Each overlay (does not require a logo) would be considered as one Al sheet irrespective of the size not exceeding Al. (The overlay must be cut from an A1 sheet). No part of the presentation shall spill out the 8' x 4' panel. All individual sheets and panels shall have NASA logo as per the NASA logo guidelines. Scale models are not allowed. Two identical copies of a Report (hard bound) not exceeding 30 A4 pages (both side prints are allowed but including cover page it should be 30 leaf) that give an entire overview of the project should accompany the submission. The report should feature the NASA logo appropriately on the cover page and on each page of the report. Both copies should contain the Institution code and name of the project on the cover. However, only one copy should have the name of the Institution featured. Jury members shall shortlist the Institutions for A.V. presentation. Time given for the short listed entries shall not exceed 8 minutes. Any Institution shall not reveal its identity in any manner either in sheets, reports or the presentation. 2 copies of the CD containing the soft copy (editable and non editable) of the each deliverables as report, sheets and the A.V. Presentation must be submitted. One of these is for the archives of Gateway College of Architecture and Design and the other for the use of the participating Institution in A.V. Presentation. Both CDs should contain the Institution code and only one should mention the name of the Institution. 4
