Logic / Math Small Group Activity Plan Early Childhood Lesson Plan Format 1.

Identifying Information - Ocean Patterns What Comes Next? - Logic - Math 2. Developmental Domains - Cognitive - Physical 3. A. Behavioral Objectives - The children will choose the appropriate item to complete the patterns. B. Foundations/Standards - M.6.15 Reproduce simple AB patterns of concrete objects. - M.6.16 Predict what comes next when shown a simple AB pattern of concrete objects. 4. Planning Thought Processes Context of Exploration In the classroom we notice, create and discuss patterns throughout the environment. We use patterns daily on our calendar numbers. We will explore pattern concepts in small groups and one on one with this activity. Rationale This activity was chosen to support Logic and Mathematical learners and to assess their understanding of concepts. The specific manipulatives were chosen based on the current Ocean theme the children had shown an interest in. Anticipating challenges The children may not be able to complete the activity without assistance. 8 choices of objects to finish the pattern may be too many for some children. I might need to narrow down the choices of objects to finish the pattern and I might need to scaffold them by analyzing with them the beginning of the pattern they are to finish. 5. Materials Pattern mats Manipulative cards to complete the patterns Colored mini shells for them to make their own patterns

6. Activity Procedure A. Motivation/Introduction - The activity will be presented as a teacher assisted activity in a learning center - We can discuss the images on the manipulative cards, Which of these animals do you like best? Why? - Then we can talk about the matt and notice there are patterns, I will explain to them that they are going to choose a card to complete each pattern B. Concept exploration - We will start by looking at and exploring the cards - We will explore the simple AB pattern and see if the child can find the appropriate card to complete the pattern - When they can do the AB pattern we will move on to the other patterns AAB, ABB, ABC; giving assistance to complete the more difficult ones C. Inquiry (Open Ended Questions) Which card do you think completes the pattern? How did you choose that card to complete the pattern? How far do you think this pattern could go on? What kinds of patterns do you see around the classroom? D. Closure - Once they have completed the patterns on the pattern matt, I will offer them the colored shells to create their own patterns. - Can you create a pattern? - What makes it a pattern? E. Assessment - The activity will be complete when the children have finished the AB pattern, attempted the other patterns and created an AB pattern with the shells. - I will document their ability to complete the different patterns on their developmental checklist and with photos. Extension Ideas - We will explore patterns further by using manipulatives related to other themes throughout the year. We will also be looking for and noticing patterns throughout the day in our environment, inside and outside.
