Why Add-Ins
Why do we want add-ins? Efficiency! Productivity and filling gaps, etc. all fall under efficiency in my view. Efficiency is one of those buzzwords that is oft used but sometimes misunderstood or mis-used.

Bonus for users of all ages and technical abilities: Its Safe Some are free, some pay-to-play safe? It IS the internet so lets be a bit sceptical -I quote that Safe bit tongue in cheek since as with everything in the wild or on the internet nothing is 100% safe or fool proof. Not every App & Add-In is perfect and as with many things in BIM (and life) nothing can accommodate everyones divergent and at times contradictory needs. Safe, Easy I can argue those points pedantically but powerful? Why yes, there is power in this site. To be most powerful and safe test all apps on a non production installation prior to using or implementing any soft or hardware.

My favourite part of these tools may be the Job Time Tracker which automatically tracks your true (net) time spent on editing a particular project (job). You can specify idle time delays (pauses between commands) which won't be calculated into the total project time. You can track individual sessions, total time and the number of executed commands. The resulting data can be exported to Excel OK, maybe my favourite is the Reference List No wait; the Floor Legend (not just for floors either)!!! I got it the Element Legend. No, nothe Anaglyph is the best You get the point: these include a good assortment of Add-Ins, affording Revit life to be a bit dreamier. Whether Structural, Mechanical or Architectural you will be intrigued by CADstudios offerings.

If you want an in-depth review of the 3DA Systems PDF Converter, limitations explained and all go to: Not a bad tool, a little expensive if you ask me but since I use Adobe Creative Suite I have no need for an external 3D PDF creator other than Well, Exporting to Design Review .DWFs then I print those to PDF (when the need arises). BTW: This method is faster than creating PDFs directly from Revit Go try it if you dont believe me!
Batch Family Loader This tool automates the process of loading families into projects. Family Tools This tool contains powerful tools that assist with the family creation process. Revision Cloud Remover This tool makes it fast and easy to remove revision clouds from your project. Watermark This tool adds secure digital signatures to your families and projects. WOW, KiwiCodes has some awesome add-ins!!! Undoubtedly more to come So this is a good time to discuss how you should be finding apps and add-ins, etc. We humans can be lazy (and not in the efficient way), sometimes we ask others before exhausting the options available at our fingertips. I will keep it simple because it really IS!!!
Real Help
Internet Searches
1) Searching to provide others answers to questions they should find themselves: http://lmgtfy.com/ 2) Searching to get answers yourself: https://www.google.com/
1) Revit Forum http://www.revitforum.org/forum.php 2) F1 (Help) This is not a joke!!! If you ask a question that is already answered in the native software help, I will come by your desk, ask if you searched helpif not I will have you hit F1, type in the issue and if the answer is there you may feel stupid. We dont want that! EMPOWER OTHERS AND YOU BOTH WILL GAIN POWER!!! Providing the ability for others to help themselves as much as is truly possible is a great act of compassion okmaybe a small act of compassion but you get my point.
We work on ourselves in order to help others, but also we help others in order to work on ourselves. ~Pema Chodron [Name redacted] decided to ask How do you help someone who wont help themselves? Here are a few gems I bet you have (or will have) some ideas of your own to add as well First, check yourself. Do they really need help, or are you pushing some agenda subconsciously or otherwise? Second, let them know youre there. Third, give them an example to follow. ~Carl B Salazar Dont enable them. Put the tools in their hands to help themselves, show them how to use them, step back, and be there when they trip. Love them when they fall. Repeat repeatedly. ~Crystal Boudreau You cant make people be what you want them to be and you cant decide what is best for them. You can only choose for yourself. There is a huge difference between cant and wont. Cant might be open to help. Wont cant be your problem. The best thing is wont might not always be wont. Hope for that. ~ Melodee Luka Kardash From http://tinybuddha.com/blog/how-to-help-someone-who-wont-help-themselves/

Draw electrical circuits as you want them! Want switch legs, travelers, and dimming control wires? This is your answer! The program B-G-ECircuit draws electrical circuits as annotation lines, arcs, and families in Revit. The program can also add tics to an existing line or arc. B-G-ECircuit does not connect electrical families like Revit MEP's Wire; the circuits are not part of the model. However it has these advantages: Arrows are customizable. Additional tics are available for switch legs and travelers. Additional tics are available for dimming control wires. You control of the direction of the tics. You can draw circuits on detail sketches. Multiple arrows stay on the arc curve. All variants of Revit are supported. Tics family symbols are created on-the-fly as needed. Drawing a circuit is quick. After choosing the tics configuration, three clicks draws the arcs and places the perfectly-aligned tics. The next circuit you draw is just another three clicks. The program remembers the last tics configuration. Restart Revit, and everything is as you left it. Snaps are conveniently set to Nearest/Endpoints/Intersections while drawing wire and Nearest while placing tics.

DPR Model Slicer is a free Revit plug-in which facilitates the creation of 3D Building sections from a Revit model. Inherently within Revit, the only way to separate a model by floor is to filter it by reference levels. Unfortunately, this often results in a product (shown below), where items modeled as multi-floor elements, such as walls or columns, become associated with only one floor despite occupying space on many floors. During the construction coordination process, this can be a limitation, so it is often desired to have the building model separated into individual floors. DPR Model Slicer makes this process faster. The end result is a model which is sectioned by floors.

Free - Change & Replace Family and/or Type Names Platform: Revit 2013 This is a handy little tool that goes out and renames families and/or type names in your project model. Be careful though, because this version does not offer a means of isolating the renaming scope, it is all or none.
Free - Place 3D Room Tags Platform: Revit 2012 and 2013 Have you ever exported a model to Navisworks and wish your room tags were visible? This utility will place a 3D Room Tag family at each room in your model using a provided Generic Model family.
You can customize the family if you want, just don't rename the family, the type, any of the parameters, or change the category and it will work just fine. The family installs to the same directory that the add-ins get installed or you can just download it from the following link: www.case-dev.com/revit/support/3D_RoomTag.rfa Be sure the family has been loaded into the model prior to running the add-in.
Free - Migrate Parameter to Parameter Platform: Revit 2013 Have you ever needed to schedule an item of data that Revit would not let you? This is a common hurdle for many and now there's a free tool that you can use to get around this. Common uses include migrating Wall Base Constraint Element Names (Levels) into a schedulable parameter. I'm sure you guys will find lots of uses for this one.

Free - (BETA) OpenNURBS for Vasari BETA 2 Platform: Vasari 2013 BETA 2 CASE is excited to announce the Beta release of Import OpenNURBS for Autodesks Vasari Conceptual Modeling Software. The Import OpenNURBS add-in facilitates early-stage interoperability by allowing designers to import conceptual geometry from Rhino into Autodesk Vasari. Unlike importing and linking with other file formats, Import OpenNURBS will translate geometries as native Vasari elements to give designers the flexibility to further develop their designs using Vasaris modeling and analysis features. The Vasari Add-in reads the OpenNURBS file format (Rhino 4.0 3DM) and uses custom algorithms to reconstruct geometry using Vasari API methods. Currently, the Add-in supports a broad range of OpenNURBS geometry. At this stage, some geometry support has yet to be implemented but we are committed to expanding the functionality as new capabilities become available for OpenNURBS and the Vasari API. We hope you enjoy testing the new Import OpenNURBS Beta for Autodesk Vasari and we hope you can provide us with valuable feedback about the tool!

Free - Super Shared Parameter Loader Platform: Revit 2013 The user form contains options to load in a selected shared parameter file along the top. All parameters in the shared parameter file are then displayed along the left and can be shown grouped by either their assigned group name or their data type. Categories are shown along the right. There is no limit to the quantity of parameters that can be loaded on a single step, but the selected parameters and their group under association must be supported by the target document. The difference between the free version and the subscription version is that the subscription version supports family documents (*.rfa) as well as search functions.

http://www.apps.case-inc.com/content/free-egress-workaround-sending-railing-length-selectedparameter
Free - Egress Workaround for Sending Railing Length to a Selected Parameter Platform: Revit 2012, 2013 Revit 2012 does not allow you to tag the Length parameter for railings. This tool will allow you to select a parameter to send the length for each railing in your model to for the purpose of tagging their length. This is a super easy and common workaround for tagging Egress path distances. Using railing means you can use arcs, straight distances, and even ramps in your egress calculations. Railing will also display in 3D making them an even sexier option for an Egress workaround...

Free - Create Plan Views by Discipline Platform: Revit 2012, 2013 This is Alan Jackson's first Add-In and it creates plan views by level as Floor Plans or Reflected Ceiling Plans. You will get a dialog telling you the views that it created as well as the ones that it could not create for whatever reason.
Free - Delete Sheets, Views, and Revit Links Platform: Revit 2012, 2013 It is a common task to remove as much from a model as possible prior to sharing it with your consultants for the purpose of linking into their model or sometimes you want to lighten up a model that was sent to you for the same purpose. Delete Sheets, Views and Revit Links does just what it says. You can select which of the three options to include from the provided checkboxes. This tool should only be used on models detached from central as it can be quite destructive.
Free - External Wall Directions Platform: Revit 2012, 2013 This tool comes in as a request from the Passive House design community and solves the problem of reporting the external wall directionality in either text (N, NW, S, etc.) or by angle. The angle values use project North as 0 winding clockwise back around to 360. The resulting data can then be pushed into a user specified text formatted parameter. The angle option can be written to either a text or number formatted parameter. Look for a future update that will include external doors and windows hosted within external walls soon (no promises).
Free - Import Images to Drafting Views Platform: Revit 2012, 2013 This tool launches a dialog that allows you to import multiple images at a time each into their own individual drafting views. The drafting views will be named the same as the image that they originate from. This tool is handy on large renovation projects where photographs of existing conditions are documented in the model. You can tag your floor plans showing where the photograph was taken from (that part is manual of course ;)
Free - Reusable and Sharable Selection Sets Platform: Revit 2012, 2013 This add-in allows you to save a list of ElementID's for all selected objects to various text files. You can later call these selections back up and reapply them in your model. There is no limit to the number of elements that you can have selected nor the amount of separate selection sets that you can save. You can also share the selection set text file with anyone on your design team. The text files containing the ElementID's must be TXT file format and saved under the user's profile: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Case Design Inc\Revit Tools\2012\Selection Sets
Free - Export Families to RFA Files (By Category) Platform: Revit 2012, 2013 We are all aware that Revit can export families to a library, but the control that you get is less than sufficient for large models. This exporter will organize your families into sub directories matching the names of the category that the family originated from. This tool obviously will not be able to export system families or in-place families of any kind :(

Free - Door Mark Updater Platform: Revit 2012, 2013 This little guy uses the room number of the room adjacent to the door to number each door mark parameter. Where multiple doors are along a common room number, the remaining doors are numbered alphabetically suffix of the room number (1001A, 1001B, etc.). You will have the option to update doors by selection, common level, or the entire model all in a single click.
Free - Revision Cloud Data Export to Text File Platform: Revit 2012, 2013 Revit does not offer a means to schedule individual revision cloud elements, so this add-in will export all revision cloud data to a CSV file for you. Exported data includes revision name, date, description, view and sheet name as well as the comments parameter for each and every cloud element in your model.
Free - Change and Replace Line Styles Platform: Revit 2012 and 2013 Have you ever imported a DWG file into your model and got a bunch of unwanted line styles? Have you ever wanted to quickly change those line styles to your standard styles already loaded into your model? This little guy does just this!

Revit's keynote system is a powerful way to integrate data into Revit families, reduce errors, and streamline documentation. The text files, though, are cumbersome and difficult to work with. Keynote Manager was created to provide a simple, efficient interface to edit keynote files. Edit keynotes in a tree view instead of a long list in notepad or Excel Automatically sequence keynote numbers Add & edit new notes without worrying about tabs or formatting Locate keynotes quickly with the find/replace function Perform find/replace on the key value, description, or both Multiple users can work on a single file concurrently Reorganize notes by simple drag and drop Select multiple keynotes and renumber in sequence
Info Link
Keynotes can be linked to external documents or web locations and those documents can be opened from Keynote Manager. Files will be opened in their default editor and web locations will be opened in the default browser. Link to the Manufacturer's web site, content page, or specification Link to a word processor specification Link to an image of the installed product Create as many links as desired
Locates keynote files for all open Revit projects. Monitors keynote files for changes and notifies users via an Unobtrusive notification icon (see image to the right). Notifies users of the need to reload their keynote file. Warns users if they are about to print a file that has changed keynotes and allows print cancellation to avoid incorrect prints. Can be turned on and off at will. Can be turned off by default in settings. Available for Revit 2012 or later only.
Backup Files
Everyone knows the frustration of losing data or an entire file due to either human or computer error. Keynote Manager's distributed backup system
Page 111 of 123
ensures that if anything happens to a keynote file there will be a recent backup that can be restored and most if not all of your work saved. Text file and comment backups are distributed on all users computers so even in the event of a hard drive or complete computer failure another user will likely have a backup copy Backups are created automatically when a file is opened or closed Backups can be created automatically at a specified interval Select the number of backups per user (up to 999)
autoLink
One of the Revit's greatest strengths in the realm of documentation is the automatic coordination of view callout tags and the views' actual detail location. Change the detail number on a sheet and all view tags that reference that view update automatically. However, Revit has no similar ability with general annotations, text, or scheduled parameters... until now! Revit workFlow's autoLink function allows you to reference views from any instance parameter, simply by typing the view reference as you normally would with text. Views are then automatically updated whenever the view reference changes. With version 3.0, autoLink now allows you to reference views from linked files; whenever the location of that view changes the link is updated automatically, no coordination necessary! Reference views with a simple annotation symbol or within any parameter. Update links automatically when a view is moved. Fully customizable autoLink symbols and parameters.
viewRename
Tired of looking through default view names like 'Section 1', 'Section 2', and 'Elevation 1-a' to try and find the view you were looking for? Have you ever looked for 'Ceiling Plan - First Floor' only to find it at the bottom of the project browser because someone didn't read their standards and named it 'RCP - First Floor'? viewRename is your answer!
View naming standards are extremely helpful when used, but too often users are in too much of a hurry to worry about renaming views and doing it properly. With viewRename, you simply set up your office standard naming conventions for various view types when you first set the program up and views are named by the standard automatically, no mess, no hassle and no lost views! Existing views can also be renamed to match the standard with two quick clicks! Set the office standard once and follow it effortlessly. Set a different standard for various types of elevations, sections, and callouts. No more lost views or generic view names. Update existing views to the standard in 2 clicks. Set View Template automatically Use Instant Updater option to name views immediately on creation
finishFloors
Have you ever wanted to model floor finishes in Revit but didn't want to spend the time creating floors in every room? finishFloors can create floors for just a few rooms or every room in your project in just a few clicks, automatically coordinated with your finish schedule! Just tell finishFloors what floor types to create for each finish code and which rooms need floors and they will be automatically generated with the correct floor type, offset by their thickness so that they will sit on top of the structural floor. Floors generated by finishFloors are linked to rooms, so if the room boundary or finish ever change updating the finish floor is one button click away!
utomatically map finish codes from the finish schedule to floor types and generate finish floors coordinated with the finish schedule. Save your standard finish code mapping and settings will be automatically loaded. Finish floors automatically sit on the top of the structural floor. Finish Floors can have automatic thresholds created at doorways extending to the center of frame, face of frame, or no thresholds at all. When finishes or room boundaries change, update existing floors with a single click. Pre-select rooms to focus on a single area or select nothing to work with all rooms in the project. Use 'Floors by Click' to generate floors one at a time with a single click, just like Revit ceilings.
dimensionCheck
Quality control is vital to a good set of construction documents and proper dimensioning is vital when communicating a design layout to the contractor. Items that are not properly located can cost time and money in RFI's or costly re-do's when someone on site decides they know 'about where it should go'.
dimensionCheck is designed to quickly and efficiently identify objects in a dimension plan that are not properly located to avoid unnecessary errors. Select a category or set of categories and find all elements in the current view that are not currently dimensioned. Quickly locate one or more nondimensioned elements using the show tool to determine where the dimension should be placed or if one is necessary. Search only the current view, or all subviews as well (i.e. enlarged plans). Non-modal dialog box allows you to find non-dimensioned elements, place the dimension, and then move to the next element without closing the command. Place several dimensions and refresh the dialog to see the remaining elements without dimensions.
Level filters can be set to recognize multi-level elements like walls and columns by their top constraint, base constraint, or either constraint. Family Category Phase Created Phase Demolished The Selection Master full interface can be used to create filters based on any of these properties or combine as many filters as desired to refine the set. Find all doors over 7'-0" high on the second floor, or simply find every element related to the second floor level.
Preview Elements
Before returning to Revit, Selection Master allows you to preview the elements that satisfy the filters you have created. From here you can change your filters, further refine the set of elements, export a report, or have them automatically selected for you in Revit.
Quick Filters
You can use Quick Filters as a shortcut to easily apply the basic filters with predefined settings in a single click. Want to find all elements related to a certain level? Use the 'Quick Level' command. Want to quickly select everything created in Phase 2? Use 'Quick Phase Created'. You can even use Quick Level to avoid losing elements when removing redundant or unnecessary levels.
Rehost
Ever decide that a level is redundant and unnecessary but were afraid to delete it because you knew you would lose everything that may still be on that level? Or just place a series of elements only to find out that you were working on the wrong level? Selection Master to the rescue! If you need to delete a level, use the Quick Level tool to find everything on the level and rehost to move it; if you just placed some objects on the wrong level simply select them and use rehost to move them to the correct level.
Reporting
Selection Master not only allows you to preview the elements that match the filters, you can also export the data to a comma separated value (.csv) or plain text (.txt) file for use or analysis in any standard spreadsheet program.
In addition to exporting the preview data, Selection Master also allows exporting of all the levels, girds, families, and phases in the project. Lastly, Selection Master allows you to view all plan and ceiling plan views in the project and sort or filter them by level and export this data to .csv or .txt OK, I think that was a perfect lead up to our finale I can think of no better denouement to this handout! There are so many great offerings but they all miss one component IMHO, but before we hit the final add-in for Revit (The Best One), let us take a brief moment to review. We have seen, maybe even learned, How to find add-ins (and anything else findable) Via F1 (Help) and on the Internets, at large. We have seen, maybe even learned, about many of the current, top add-ins for Revit. We have seen, Maybe even learned, that it is not practical, let alone possible in any reasonable sense to use every add-in... Mainly due to the ever growing & changing add-in & app landscape. That said, were at the point where it can be re-stated that we havent yet discussed the best add-in possible... It is an add-in that exists and we all have unlimited access to, at the very least, one copy of it, though I contend we have billions and It/they can be used every day. The Best Add-In works in Revit, 3DS Max, Navisworks, Vasari, Dynamo, Rhino, Grasshopper, Sketchup, Archicad, Digital Projectdamn, even AutoCAD -and I am pretty sure it can integrate into many more software paradigms: after thorough testing!!! Dont have an add-in like that yet? Here it comes... The Best Add-In for Revit is... Got it yet??? OK, you have to turn one more page to get it then ;-)

Replace Parameters function now allows you to set parameters to be either instance or type. It is titled Instance Option and has three possible selections: Match Existing (Default) - If a new parameter is specified with this option the new parameter will match the type/instance value of the one its replacing. If no new parameter is specified the existing parameter will not be modified. Make Instance - Force the new parameter to instance if one is specified. If no new parameter is specified it will force the existing parameter to instance. Also specifying the same parameter for existing and new will simply force the existing to instance. Make Type - Force the new parameter to type if one is specified. If no new parameter is specified it will force the existing parameter to type. Also specifying the same parameter for existing and new will simply force the existing to instance. Family Type parameter warning now has a Dont show again checkbox...
