    EXTERNAL - ESSAY PLAN FOR FILM NOIR - OPTION B - The genre has been inuenced by society.

    PARAGRAPH 1 - Discuss what genre is. For excellence it is expected you use relevant theories such as those by Levi Strauss. Using the notes from the documentary Bringing Darkness to Light explain what genre is and argue how lm noir could be described as a genre.

    PARAGRAPH 2 - Discuss how lm noir originated from Germany - the role of German expressionism, etc. You make like to start discussing history at the time including the role of women, how the industry worked in Hollywood and the thoughts/feelings of America pre and post war. You could use Fritz Lang as a good example here.

    PARAGRAPH 3 - Discuss the conventions of lm noir and why these conventions might be used in lm noir. Start to use examples here. Again, the documentaries we watched are very useful.

    rst example as it is considered one of the rst lms that started lm noir but not strictly lm noir. Use your cheat sheet provided for you or Page 26-35 of your lm noir exam book. Youll want to discuss censorship laws, the role of criminals, etc. Youll need your notes! Use relevant theories/ideas for excellence.

    PARAGRAPH 5 Discuss the role of America pre and post war using these examples. In Casablanca you have the idea of America pre-war as being neutral and the call to action. Notes were handed to you and are also posted on the blog. For the BIG HEAT you should discuss both nuclear war and the idea of how the lm was inuenced by the Ke-

    PARAGRAPH 6 Discuss the role of women using these films as examples. How are characters portrayed to allign with the ideas of the role of women at the time. Has the production of these films been influenced by these ideas? What about how the films made both Joan Crawford and Barbara Stanwyck a success? Use relevant theories/ideas for Excellence.

    CONCLUSION: Using a closing paragraph without saying to conclude... discuss the how lm noir was inuenced by society at the time. Think of examples, summarising war, criminals, censorship, the role of women and the studio system at the time. Keep it simple! Could you end with a quote?
