Independent Research
As part of our groups independent research, a survey was conducted to gain insights into the attitudes and perception towards NAPLAN testing. The survey targeted teachers, students and parents. This was further supported by research conducted by the University of Western Sydneys Whitlam Institute. Some common findings: Increased pressures placed on principals, teachers, students and parents to elevate performance levels. Neglecting other curriculum areas to allow time for NAPLAN preparation. Detrimental effects on students emotional and physical well-being. NAPLAN results not utilised to inform and improve future planning. NAPLAN perceived as a school ranking tool. (ABC News, 2012) On the whole, studies reveal an imbalance in attitudes and perceptions towards NAPLAN testing. In most cases, the negative attitudes towards systematic testing far outweigh the positives. From our findings, it can be concluded that NAPLAN is not conducive to student success.

NAPLAN Overview
In 2008, the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy was introduced across Australia for all students in years 3,5,7 and 9, to provide parents, teachers, schools and school systems with nationwide information about the literacy and numeracy achievement of students (ACARA, 2010). According to ACARA (2010), the NAPLAN tests are regarded by national curriculum developers as providing important data about student and school achievements that will inform the curriculums ongoing implementation (ACARA). Through NAPLAN results, teachers are able to identify students who are in need of additional support and the domains in which they can improve their own teaching (Brady & Kennedy, 2010).

NAPLAN how does systematic assessment and reporting impact on student success? Dimension Four, Complex Reasoning ProcessSystems Analysis was used to examine the proposed question. According to Marzano and Pickering (1997, p. 246), Systems analysis is the process of analyzing the parts of a system and the manner in which they interact....the process of describing how the parts of a system work together.

STEP 1
Identify parts of the system

STEP 2
Describe the boundaries

STEP 3
Describe how parts affect each other

STEP 4
Identify various parts of the system and for each explain what would happen if this part changed or stopped working
