AMENDMENTS PROJECT

WHAT IS AN AMENDMENT

An amendment is a change in, or addition to, a constitution or law.

Step 1 Amendment Is Proposed

Step 2 Amendment Is Ratified

The four ways to add an amendment are

Proposed by Congress by a 2/3 vote in both houses.

Ratified by the State legislatures of (38) of the States

Proposed at a national convention called by Congress when requested by 2/3 (34) of the State legislatures

Ratified by conventions held in (38) of the States

AMENDMENT 1

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances

This personally effects me because I am personally Episcopalian along with my family. Being able to decide my religious preference benefits me because I dont have to feel the pressures of society to think a specific way.

AMENDMENT 1

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances

Having the right to speak out freely benefits everyone because if the government starts becoming corrupt the public has the ability to talk about it and do something to change it.

AMENDMENT 2

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed This amendment effects my family because both of my parents have licenses for guns because they go hunting. I also have many friends who go hunting

AMENDMENT 4

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

This amendment effects my family because my college student sister just recently got her house illegally searched because the police officers didnt have search warrants and there was no probably cause. Her case has the possibility of getting dismissed because of this amendment.

AMENDMENT 9

The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

This amendment is important to me because it shows that the law acknowledges peoples rights and recognize that not all of them have been listed and that our government embraces change.

AMENDMENT 19

The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex. This amendment is extremely important to me and should be important to all women around the world because this officially gives us the right to vote

AMENDMENT 24

The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax

This amendment is especially beneficial to people of my age because they may not be able to pay a tax in order to vote and if that were they case a large sum of the populations voice wouldnt be heard.

AMENDMENT 26

The right of citizens of the United States, who are 18 years of age or older, to vote, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of age.

This amendment is important to me because this year I just recently turned 18 and was able to participate in the presidential election.

REMOVING AMENDMENT 27

No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened.

This amendment could be removed mainly because I dont pay tax dollars so how much and when the congress people get paid doesnt effect me.

ADDING AMENDMENT 28

The right of citizens of the United States to make their own life choices shall not be denied or abridged by the United States.

I feel as if though this amendment should be added because people should have the right to decide what is in the best interest of them whether that be to drop out of school, get an abortion, and so on. People should be able to make themselves happy.
