Course Description: American Literature for grade 11 is a study of the major literary topics and themes across the history of the United States from pre-colonial times to present day. Students will focus on the major literary forms of the emerging nation, analyze the literary themes and trends, and research and compose several essays, speeches, and presentations. Our survey of American literature is with an emphasis on vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and communication through writing and speaking. This course is designed accordingly to English-Language Content Standards for CA Public Schools and you may access those standards at: http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/elacontentstnds.pdf In addition to American Literature, students will gain exposure to college level reading and writing lessons created by Cal State Universitys program entitled, Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC). The ERWC modules will be incorporated into our course outline, which prepares students to meet the expectations of college and university faculty. Required Materials: - College-ruled Composition book - College-ruled lined paper - Pens (black, blue, red) - Highlighters (various colors) -Section of 3-ring binder for English 11 handouts Homework Supplemental assignments will be given in order to extend the scope and depth of topics discussed in class. There is an extensive reading list for this class. Students are responsible for keeping current with assignments and being aware of test and quiz dates. There WILL BE unannounced quizzes on homework assignments. Attendance Class attendance is required. When a class is missed, the STUDENT is responsible for any missed work, announcements, or course changes made during class. Please refer to your student handbook for the policy on absences. All assignments are due at the beginning of class, this means that you should come to class with your work ALREADY printed out and ready to be given to the instructor. Exceptions given for late assignments will only be made by the instructor PRIOR to the due date.

Grading Procedure Unlike a traditional grading scale, Heritage CRAHS follows a Standards-Based grading system. This grading system links all assignments to the CA Standards taught in the subject area. If a student can show proficiency in all the Standards taught, then they will pass the course. Late Assignments If a student is absent, they are completely responsible for any missing assignments. Please note: Students have until the next block class session to finish any assignment that was due prior to their absence. Late homework assignments will be accepted until the next block session from its original due date. The assignment will be deducted one letter grade from its intended score. Plagiarism Plagiarism, as a form of academic dishonesty and ultimately cheating, is unacceptable. Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, any of the following: UnintentionalUnintentional instances will be dealt with in the classroom. Student will meet with teacher, correct the indentified issues, and review what is constituted as plagiarism. Inability to document sources correctly Incorrect or inaccurate documentation Incomplete works cited Partial citations Intentional Consequences for any evidence of intentional plagiarism will be made by the instructor and an administrator. Student will receive a zero on the assignment and will not be given the opportunity to re-write the paper. Copying anothers work Buying papers from any source Copy and Pasting Submitting a previous work as new Providing fake references Failure to cite text in which only one-two terms are changed Class Rules

BE READY TO LEARN AND PARTICIPATE In addition to our classroom rules, Heritage CRAHS introduced Character Counts which is a framework based on basic values. In class, we will incorporate Character Counts values called the Six Pillars of Character that include: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Consequences If class rules are not followed, the following actions will occur: 1) Verbal Warning 2) In-class detention and phone call to parent/guardian 3) Office Referral and parent/guardian conference is necessary The Successful English 11 Student: Exhibits a willingness to learn and explore new topics Reads assigned materials carefully Takes thorough notes both in and out of class Budgets time wisely to complete long-term assignments Displays proper grammar and proofreading skills on all assignments Keeps class materials organized and accessible Attends class consistently Interacts respectfully and patiently with others Completes his/her own work without plagiarizing Prepares assignments outside of class, on time Reads and follows assignment directions Studies for tests by reviewing, rereading, and discussing material As the undersigned, I have read and understood Mrs. Riturbans course requirements and procedures.
