Juvenile Crime Statistics Paper

This paper will be focused on juvenile crime and the juvenile crime

statistics. Juvenile crime, is different crimes committed by children under the

age of 18. Their offenses include delinquent acts that is considered to be

crimes if an adult were to commit them. Juveniles are children who truly

need help before it is too late.

There are different theories about what influence juveniles to commit

delinquent acts the thing that influences juvenile the most is societies. The

reason for this is because society labels people according to their upbringing,

their environment and their lack of education. The main purpose of the

juvenile justice system is to rehabilitate juveniles so that they can become a

contributing member of society and not another career criminal. Now it is,

time to get to the main point of this paper and talk about juvenile crime

statistics .

We need statistics to help measure things and in this case we need

statistics to help measure juvenile crime. When measuring statistics it is very

important to understand exactly what statistics is all about. According to

(Snyder, 2003) “the arrest statistics report the number of arrests made by

law enforcement agencies in a particular year- not the number of individuals

arrested, nor the number of crimes committed.” Back in 2001 juveniles were

involved in murder, aggravated assault, burglary, robbery, and they carried

weapons. The juvenile arrests rates for burglary had declined to 66% from

1980-2001. The violent crime arrests rates for the black juveniles and the

violent crime rates for the white juveniles had declined a lot between 1980

thru 2001.

Juvenile crime has declined and it is a result of the law enforcement. The

juvenile portions of violent crime had declined to 12% in 2001. The juvenile

portions of murder had dropped to 5% in 2001. Also the juvenile portion of

robbery has also dropped 14% in 2001, however, the juvenile portion of

robbery is still up from what it was back in 1980. The juvenile statistics is

sometimes up and sometimes down. The juvenile arrests rate for drug abuse

between 1980 and 1993 had remained within a limited range. There are a

lot of reasons for that because drugs are very popular these days people and

kids take drugs for a variety of reasons. Not only do people take drugs for

pleasure they also use drugs as a way to get money. Therefore, drug use will

not go down anytime soon.

Between 1993 and 1997, the drug abuse arrest rate for juveniles grew

77%. When 2001 came the juvenile arrest rate for drug abuse had fallen 16%

from its 1997 high. According to (Snyder, 2003) “ during the period from

1992 to 2001, juvenile arrests for drug abuse violations increased 121%,

while adult arrests grew 33%.” As long as people need drugs there will

always be crimes committed as a result of them. Also as long as kids can get

drugs from their friends they will continue to use them. It is a shame how

there are more kids on drugs are selling drugs then adults.

In 2001, 28% juvenile females were arrested. 645,000 females under the

age of 18 were arrested back in 2001. From 1992 thru 2001 the female

juveniles were arrested more than the male juveniles in most of the offense

categories. As a result the growth in female violent crime was for both adult

females and the juvenile females. The assault arrests rate between 1980 and

1994 for preteens had increased 126% and 99%.

In conclusion, these statistics came from the FBI and they were the one

handling most of the stuff. These statistics were made in 2001 so they

maybe a little different now especially the way crime is here in Louisiana.

Hopefully one day juvenile crime will disappear and the juveniles will be the

way they were meant to be and not criminals.
