READING Next week we will start our first reading unit. Our first story, Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings is a section out of the excellent novel where a boy faces a tough decision. He learns that doing whats right is not always easy. We will work on the reading skill of character and plot. The new reading tests will start next Friday. The tests will no longer center around the story but instead the skill. The test will consist of vocabulary that was practiced during the week, a story (which students have never seen before) and questions accompanying the story, and an essay question related to the weekly reading story. SPELLING- The practice tests will be on Tuesdays. Students who get an A+, A, or A will be considered passing and will not have to take the final test on Friday. Spelling lists go home on Fridays! Students can access the list and practice their words on www.spellingcity.com/triton5 Use the weekend to get a head start on spelling. MATH- Students will have math homework almost every night and all math homework pages must be signed by a parent/guardian. I do this for several reasons. One of the main reasons is it lets me know that parents are witnessing homework being done and the quality of it so there are no surprises when grades are given out. If students return homework without a parent signature I do not make them stay in at recess, but I do charge them mini-economy money as a fine. LANGUAGE- We will review four kinds of sentences (Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative, and Exclamatory) and how to punctuate them. SOCIAL STUDIES Right now we are studying Geography. We have practiced memorizing the continents and the oceans. There will be a quiz on these within a week. Students must know the location of these. They have a map in their binder to help them study. Next week we will learn more about the regions of the U.S. and what states, cities, landforms, and landmarks can be found in these regions. SCIENCE We began our first unit in science which is all about Scientific Inquiry and using science tools. Students will learn, in depth, about the scientific process as we apply it to many different kinds of scientific experiments.

Note From the Teacher: We have had a successful first week in 5th grade! Ive been very impressed with the class and how well they have gotten back into the swing of things. Its not always easy. As an F.Y.I., a newsletter will come home every Friday. If you dont see one, make sure to ask your child. It always seems to get buried in the bottom of their bag somehow. :) I will hopefully start posting these to our class website as well. (www.mrsbrosman.weebly.com) If you havent checked our website out yet, please do so! Its a great resource! Subscribe with your email on the lower right-hand side of the page to receive emails when the website has been updated. With next week being the first full week of the school year, you can expect regular homework to start coming home. Remember, you can access what homework your child has by viewing heir agenda, calling homework hotline, and looking on the website. It is possible that your child may come home with no homework or very little each night if they are using their study table time at the end of the day wisely. I give them between 20-30 minutes of homework time at the end of the day. Help your child get into a routine of doing homework as soon as they get home so there is no issue with it getting done at night. ~Mrs. Brosman
