Case study

The first step

Comparative study
Site Design on the basis of site context Organization of spaces Visual effects Comparison with standards Comments

Site
Dayananda sagar school of architecture

Sloped site- situated on a hillock Site cut and filled to a leveled surface

R.V. college of architecture Sloped site- site inclined in two directions Designed with context to the sites slope

Design on the basis of site context

Dayananda sagar school of architecture

R.V. college of architecture

A dedicated block for architecture in a campus of an engineering college To screen activities of school from engineeringblank walls Slope incorporated in design Built to human scale

No separate block for architecture Housed in a floor of a block meant to serve an engineering department Building here hasnt been designed with context to the site which is actually a sloped site

Organization of spaces
Dayananda sagar school of architecture
Learning spaces branch out from the corridor Learning spaces
o Studio cum lecture halls, 5 nos., meant for 40 students o 1 seminar hall that doubles as a crit room o A 40 unit computer lab

R.V. college of architecture

Studio spaces separated from lecture rooms to promote physical activity Learning spaces
o 9 studios with a capacity of 40 students o 6 lecture halls with A/V facilities o 1 seminar hall with 120 seating capacity o 60 unit computer lab

Interactive spaces
o Nothing specificthe built environment does not promote interaction

Interactive spaces
o Landscaped courtyards o 200 seater- Open air theatre

Two faculty rooms equipped with PCs

Faculty rooms individual and common rooms

Lighting & ventilation

Dayananda sagar school of architecture Doubly loaded corridor dimly lit and poorly ventilated by natural means inducing the necessity for artificial lighting Well lit studios/classrooms of height 12 with strip windows

R.V. college of architecture

doubly loaded corridor-well lit and ventilated Studios- well lit and ventilated by natural means - vertical windows at two levels, studio ht-15 Classroomsartificial lighting required on gloomy days, room ht11

Comparison with standards

Standards
Studios- space required/ A0 drawing table-3.5sq.m Adjustable drawing table preferred Classrooms- 1.2 sq.m per head

R.V. college of architecture

Fixed tables A0 size Area of studio- 155 sq.m approx.3.8sq.m per head-more than sufficient Spacing between tables-edge to edge 4 Classrooms-1.56 sq.m per head

Design concept
Located in an engineering campusprivacy desired-Blank outer walls Friendly and welcoming to studentso human scale o Several small courtyards instead of a single large one Main corridor-spine of the college Site inclined in two directionslevels of site used in design Classrooms and studios spaced out to increase students physical activity and relax their minds Built form encourages interaction between students

Corridors
Main hub of the college Serves as an interaction space Display and notification space Branches out the learning spaces Runs at three different levels across the entire school Height of the corridor ranges from 10-15 since it varies from place to place due to levels in the site - 6 wide Well lit and ventilated by courtyards
