Edmodo Rules and Expectations

Read through the rules and expectations for our classs use of edmodo.com with your parents. Both you and your parents should sign if you can agree to the rules and expectations. What is edmodo? Edmodo is an online tool that provides teachers and students a secure place to connect and collaborate, share content and educational applications, and access homework, class discussions and notifications. Being a learner in the 21st century means that our students will need to master not only traditional forms of communication, but also online communication in the form of social media and virtual discussions. Edmodo will allow Mr. Finke and Ms. Kubicek the opportunity to assign 21st century homework, to share online sites and articles, and to mediate online discussions. It will allow students the opportunity to connect virtually in a safe, secure, and completely private setting. Teachers will use edmodo in the following ways: Create assignments in which students must visit a specific website and post a response. Create discussion groups for guided reading groups or other small groups in which students are expected to read discussion questions and respond to student group members. Share interesting content such as websites for projects or articles of interest to the class. Students can use edmodo in the following ways: Complete assignments. Always keep an eye on the Notifications section of your edmodo Homepage (top right corner). Assignments can be accessed from there if you miss them in the regular feed. Ask questions of classmates about homework assignments or projects. Share interesting content such as websites for projects or articles of interest to the class. Have personal communication with classmates that is appropriate and positive. Parents can use edmodo in the following ways: Keep up with the goings-on of English 7 at Century. Please note - not all student or teacher posts are visible to parents. Parents have access that is unique to your own child, allowing you to follow the posts of your child while not necessarily seeing those posts of all students. Students may access edmodo at home, during independent work time, before/after school, and possibly during literature circles IF a reading group has a discussion question to respond to. Privacy Concerns The English 7 edmodo group can be seen only by members of our unique group. When students post, the only viewers of these posts will be Mr. Finke, Ms. Kubicek, students in our class, and parents who choose to sign up for the site. In addition, student last names are never visible on edmodo. Teachers can see ALL direct posts and ALL replies made by students. Teachers can also see what time of day (or night!) posts are made. Further, teachers receive an email every time a student posts, and teachers dont really want to receive hundreds of emails reading Hello?, Anyone on?, etc.

Signing up for edmodo. Go to https://forestlake.edmodo.com/ Click Im a Student Use the group code for your specific hour: See Mr. Finke for this code Choose your own username and password. There is no need for students to enter an email address. Enter your first and last name. (Remember your last name will never show up as more than an initial.) Parents who wish to sign up should first have their child sign up. Once your child is logged on, you will see a parent code. This parent code is unique to each student so that you can follow your childs activities while on edmodo. You should then follow the steps above (choosing parent sign up instead of Im a Student) and enter your unique parent code. If you have trouble locating your parent code, teachers do have access to them and we can let you know yours. Student Usernames and Passwords Edmodo might be one of the first opportunities for students to pick their own username and password for an online resource. Please discuss as a family what a good choice might be. Discuss at home your own expectations and procedures for writing down and remembering your username and password. In the event that a student forgets a username, teachers have access and can provide it. Teachers do not have access to passwords however. In the event that a student forgets his or her password, his or her profile will be deleted and he or she can sign up again. Rules for edmodo. Read the following rules carefully. Students who misuse edmodo will be asked to leave the English 7 group. 1. All posts must be appropriate for school and positive in message. 2. All posts should use proper English grammar and spelling. Although edmodo feels like Facebook, texting, etc., it is still a school platform and your best communication skills are expected. 3. Your icon/avatar must be a school appropriate picture 4. Assignments on edmodo are graded assignments. This means that students without computer access at home may have to come in before/after school and use the media center computers to complete their edmodo assignments. Please contact Mr. Finke or Ms. Kubicek if you know you will be unable to gain access to edmodo and we will provide you with a paper/pencil version of the assignments. Please note: This should be a last resort option as this will limit the collaboration with your classmates/teachers. Consequences for not following edmodo rules. 1. Your profile can be set to read only so that you can read your classmates posts, but you cannot write anything on the site. 2. You can be asked to leave the English 7 group, and your profile can be deleted completely. If you have read this document thoroughly, please fill out the edmodo terms of use page attached and return it to Mr. Finke or Ms. Kubicek. We look forward to a great year of communicating 21st style on edmodo!
