James was born c. 1805 most likely in Dublin. He married Alice Cosgrove around 1835. Their first child was probably James (as he was called after his father) and he was born in Carlisle, Cumberland, England. This suggests that the family emigrated to Carlisle for a while or were from there originally but I have been unable to find any records of them in Carlisle or the UK. Many Irish lived in Cumbria at this time working in the mines and other industries, sometimes going over for seasonal work. This is ongoing research.
Catherine (Kate) was born about 1848 (no record found) so unsure if she was born in Ireland or England. Before the birth of Patrick the family returned to Ireland and settled in Irishtown (13 Bath Avenue Place and subsequently 21 Bath Street). Patrick was born in 1852, followed 2 years later by Thomas Joseph.

The parish records for this area (St. Marys, Haddington Road) contain records for other Leckeys so it may be that James was from here originally (this is a guess). James was a boot maker and passed on this trade to two of his sons, James and Patrick. I have found a William Leckey living in Dublin around this time with the same profession most likely a brother of James. James died on the 2nd January 1869 aged 64 of kidney disease and chronic bronchitis. His son James was present at his death. Alice, his wife, bought a plot in Glasnevin cemetery - plot reference Garden JB 102 and this is where many of the Leckey family are buried.

ALICE LECKEY
AT A GLANCE:
Born Spouse/Marriage Date Occupation Children Known Address(es) Died Burial Place 4 (known) 13 Bath Avenue Place & 21 Bath Street, Irishtown, Dublin; and 6 Eastmoreland Place, Dublin 2. 22nd February 1884 Glasnevin, Dublin 9. 1809 James Leckey; c. 1827-1836
Alice Leckey (nee Cosgrove) was born around 1809. No birth record found to date so not sure if she was born in Ireland or England. Her early history is unknown. Although James her husband died in 1869, Alice and her sons James and Patrick continued to live at 21 Bath Street, Irishtown at least up to 1877. (Both sons give this address on marriage certs.)
When Alice died she was living at 6 Eastmoreland Place, Dublin 2 (this building no longer exists photo of remaining houses from that period). Alice died in 1884 aged 75 cause of death was bronchitis and her son James was present at her death. He continues to be listed as the tenant up to 1890 when the building is listed as a building site. Alice is buried in the same plot as her husband in Glasnevin.

WILLIAM LECKEY
I have no direct evidence to link this William to any of the other (proven line) Leckeys. However, as William was a boot maker (which is the family trade) and is in Dublin in 1838 I think there is a strong possibility of him being Jamess brother. William is a common family name, i.e., Patrick Leckey was baptised Wm. Patrick but was always referred to as Patrick. Williams address in 1838 was Aungier Street, Dublin. William was before the Insolvent Debtors Court in October 1838. This court was where debtors were taken for the recovery of monies by their creditors, and that at the time in question it was for those who didn't qualify to become bankrupt. Instead, they stayed as insolvent debtors 'responsible for their debts but unable to pay them, they remained subject to common law proceedings and indefinite imprisonment, if their creditors so wished.
In 1848 William was a signatory to the William Smith OBrien Petition. Two years later he is listed at the same address in a Dublin Street Directory and again in the 1851 Dublin City Census. By 1855 William is no longer at this address he may have died or moved. This is on-going research.

(There is a William Leckey listed at 57 Clanbrassil Street Lower from 1858 to 1862 and then at Great Longford Street then disappears to check death records GRO). There are births of children recorded to this William, wife Catherine Killeen in 1857, 1860 and in 1864 with an address at 11 Great Longford Street). Birth cert required to verify Williams occupation (which will conclude this line of enquiry one way or the other!)

James was born in 1837 in Carlisle, Cumberland, England. I have been unable to find his birth record in the UK records. I suspect his birth wasnt registered but fairly sure his baptism would have been. During the 1840s a lot of Irish emigrated to this part of England to find work sometimes just for a season. Alternatively the family may have originated here and then moved to Ireland, however being Roman Catholic this doesnt seem very likely. At any rate they were living in Ireland in 1852 (when Patrick was born) and stayed here. On 27th February 1870 James, a boot maker by trade like his father and brother Patrick, married Mary Plant from Sandymount in St. Marys Church, Haddington Road. The records state that the Leckey family were still living at 21 Bath Street, Irishtown. The witnesses were James Connolly and Mary Anne Devine.
Page | 11
James (listed as Jacobus, the Latin form of his name) is god father to his niece Alice in 1879. Mary is god mother to Elizabeth, their niece in 1880 (listed as Maria, the Latin form of Mary). The couple seemed to have lived at Eastmoreland Place with his mother Alice. I have found no record of children from this marriage. Mary Leckey died from cancer, aged 45, on 25th September 1893. Mary is buried in Glasnevin in plot reference Garden IB 102. She is the only family member in this grave. Jamess address is subsequently listed as 22 Herbert Street (which is listed as a tenement in the Thoms Directories.
On 22nd May 1899 James went to live at St. Patricks House, Kilmainham which was a home for the elderly run by The Little Sisters of the Poor. He stayed here until his death. James died on 6th May 1908 and is buried in Glasnevin in plot reference Garden OG 93.5. He is the only family member in this grave.

CATHERINE LECKEY
AT A GLANCE:
Born c. 1848 Spouse/Marriage Thomas Joseph Mulligan; 2nd March 1867 Date Occupation Children Known Address(es) Died Burial Place Servant 2 (known) 13 Bath Avenue Place & 21 Bath Street, Irishtown, Dublin; and 29 North Queen Street, Belfast.
Catherine was born about 1848 or 49 (to be verified if Dublin or Carlisle). She married Thomas Joseph Mulligan, a shoemaker from Bath Avenue Place, on 2nd March 1867 in St. Marys Church, Haddington Road. Thomass father was Martin Mulligan. Catherine gave her address as 13 Bath Avenue Place. At the time she lists her occupation as servant. The couple move in with the Leckeys. A daughter Mary Bridget Mulligan is born on the same day as the wedding in 1867 but dies about 18 days later of convulsions. Marys date of birth was probably stated to be 2nd March to lend legitimacy to her birth as its unlikely that she was actually born on the day of the wedding (my opinion). There would have been scandal attached to Mary being born under such circumstances and this may be why the couple leave Dublin for Belfast. A year later the couple have a child, baptised as Thomas Joseph (registered as Joseph), who is born in November or December 1868 (birth cert and baptismal record differ). They are living at No. 29 North Queen Street, Belfast. The Mulligan family then disappear from Irish records. A search for the family in Ireland, UK or US continues. No other children from this marriage have been found to date. Figure 10: Flax Mill on North Queen Street Belfast Page | 14

JOSEPH MULLIGAN
Joseph was born a year later than his sister Mary, in Belfast in 1868. There is some confusion as to the exact date. Although his birth certificate says 14th December I have found a baptismal record for him stating his date of baptism or birth as 4 th November 1868. Registering of births was a bit haphazard at this time which may account for the discrepancy. Also, the baptismal record names him as Thomas Joseph. All searches to date for either Joseph or Thomas Joseph have not yielded any further information so I dont know if the family stayed in Belfast, came back to Dublin or emigrated.

Patrick was born in March 1852 in Irishtown. He was baptised in St. Marys Church, Haddington Road on 22/3/52. As Patrick and his brother were literate I assume they attended some form of schooling in Irishtown.
At the time of his marriage he was living at home with his mother Alice, at 21 Bath Street, Irishtown. His older brother James married in 1870 and presumably had left home at that time. He was a boot maker by trade like his father and James. He married Margaret Power from Shaw Street (just off Pearse Street) on 16th May 1877 in St. Andrews Church, Westland Row. Their witnesses were James Smyth and Annie Power (Margarets sister). Figure 12: Shop in Irishtown The couple have 10 children but lose 3 prior to Patricks death (James died 1888, Patrick died 1898 and Alice 1902).

The family lived in various rented houses in the Pearse Street area (Great Brunswick Street as was) throughout the next 20 years or so but seem to finally settle in East Lombard Street. In 1901 there were 9 in the family living in 1 room at No. 12. His father-in-law Patrick Power and eldest daughter Alice were living at No. 16.
Figure 13: Irish Architectural Archive Photos of No. 10 Lombard Street Patrick died of bronchitis in 1904 aged 52. He is buried in Glasnevin, plot reference Garden JB 102. By 1916 the rest of the family have moved to 11 Lower Sandwith Street which was the family home up to the death of Margaret Leckey in 1930 and afterwards occupied by Elizabeth and John Sherwin certainly up to at least 1968 when Elizabeth died. Patrick was born on 1st February 1878, at 24 Fitzwilliam Street, the eldest child of Patrick Leckey and Margaret Leckey (nee Power). He was baptised on the 4th February in St. Marys Church, Haddington Road. His sponsor was his aunt Annie Power. All the Leckey children were literate and most likely went to national school in the Pearse Street area. Patrick worked as a book keeper/clerk. He died aged 20 on 24th February 1898 at 12 Lombard Street of TB (3 months certified) as did his sister Alice 5 years later and his sister Teresa in 1925. Patrick never married.

His death must have been devastating for the family but not surprising considering the conditions of the tenements they lived in at the time. The details of his death were registered by his grandfather, Patrick Power (who lived at No.16) to the Registrar in Glasnevin cemetery. He is buried in a family plot, ref. no. TF109.5 Garden Section. AT A GLANCE:
Born Spouse/Marriage Date Occupation Children Known Address(es) Died Burial Place 12 & 16 Lombard Street East, Dublin 2. 4th March 1902 Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin 9. 30th October 1879 N/a
Alice was born on 30th October 1879 at 11 Bridge Street, Ringsend - but I have not been able to find her birth certificate (have searched GRO several times now believe her birth may not have been registered at all). She was baptised on 3rd November 1879 in St. Marys Haddington Road. Her sponsors are James Leckey (her uncle) and Elizabeth Power (aunt). By 1901 she lived with her grandfather, Patrick Power at 16 Lombard Street. Patrick was a master farrier and Alice may have been keeping house for him as he was a widower by this time. The rest of her family were living at No. 12. Figure 19: 11 Bridge Street, Ringsend
Alice died on 4th March 1902 at 12 Lombard Street of TB. Her uncle James Leckey registered her details with the Glasnevin Registrar (at that time he was a resident of St. Patricks House, Kilmainham a home for elderly people). Alice never married. She is buried in Glasnevin cemetery, plot reference Garden JB102.

Elizabeth was born on 9th December 1880 at 22 Bridge Street, Ringsend. She was baptised on the 13th December in St. Marys Haddington Road. Her sponsors were Richard Howard (uncle) and Mary Lecky (aunt). In 1901 she lived at home with her family at 12 Lombard Street. She was nineteen years old and her occupation was factory worker, she was working as a biscuit packer in Jacobs. In 1903 she married John Sherwin, a stone mason from 16 Upper Erne Street. In 1904 they lived at 117 Haddington Road (John is named as informant to Glasnevin of Patrick Leckeys death (Elizabeths father). Figure 20: Ringsend 1881

Elizabeth gives up work on marriage. By 1911 they lived at 24 Lombard Street and have 3 children; Patrick Anthony aged 7, born 20/1/1905; John aged 5, born 20/2/1907 and Cathleen aged 2, born Q3 1908 (to be verified GRO). A fourth child, Richard is born Q4 1913. In 1917 they lived at 11 Lower Sandwich Street (John is named as informant to Glasnevin Registrar of Patrick Powers death (his mother-in-laws father). Other members of the family list this as their address over the coming years Margaret Leckey, Elizabeths mother died at this address in 1930 and Joseph Leckey, Elizabeths brother uses this address on his marriage cert. The Sherwins are still living at this address in 1939 according to the 1939/40 electoral lists and the family consists of: Elizabeth, John, John Jnr., Cathleen and Richard. Cathleen is listed at this address up to 1940; John Junior is listed up to 1950.
John Senior dies on 29/11/1952 and is buried in Glasnevin and Elizabeth dies on 18th December 1968, both with the address 11 Lower Sandwith Street. Richard and his wife Kathleen live at this address with Elizabeth. They are buried in the same plot in Glasnevin.
The following information on the children and grandchildren of Elizabeth and John Sherwin was provided by Jim Sherwin (grandson), son of Patrick who I met on 17th January 2012 and David Sherwin on 30th August 2013. Patrick Anthony married a Miss Fleming from Sandwith Street and they had one child, Jim. Patrick died in 1980. Jim is married and has 4 (?) children and 10 grandchildren. He lives in Delgany, Co. Wicklow. Jim remembers visiting his grandmother at 11 Sandwith Street and described it as a two-storey over basement house. The kitchen was located in the basement. He recalls his grandmother Elizabeth as a small woman who wore glasses. John Sherwin married May Kells and had one child, Yvonne. John worked in McCullough Pigotts as a piano tuner and he visited my home when I was quite young to tune our piano. Jim says that John and my grandfather Joseph Leckey were good friends and that the Sherwins used to have musical evenings (in 11 Sandwith Street?) Page | 28
and my grandfather often attended these. Kathleen married Chris Dwyer they had no children. Richard Sherwin married Kathleen Mount and had three children, David, John and Ursula.

Mary was born on 26th March 1885 at 12 Lombard Street. Her God Parents at her baptism were Thomas Collins and Olivia Delahunt. None of the original houses in which any of the family lived are still standing. The picture opposite is one of the few which has survived. Some did not have basements and some would have had a shop on the ground floor. Many of the old tenement buildings were so badly run down that they were eventually demolished and replaced with blocks of flats. The landlords typically did very little to upkeep the houses and any tenant that complained was evicted. In 1901 the family lived at 12 Lombard Street and Mary was still at school. By 1911 the family lived at No. 20 Lombard Street and Mary was a biscuit packer in Jacobs like her other sisters she was 25 years old.

Joseph was born on the 16th January 1896 at 12 Lombard Street. His father Patrick was a boot maker and his mother Margaret keeps house. He was baptised in St. Andrews Westland Row on the 20th January 1896. His sponsor at his baptism was Maria Callaghan (possibly his 1st cousin daughter of Maria & Laurence Callaghan). He was the youngest of the family he had 9 siblings. When Joseph was 2 his older brother Patrick died of TB; his other brother James died in 1888 aged just 6 weeks so he would never have known him. His sister Alice died in 1902 and his sister Teresa died in 1925 both of TB. In 1901 Joseph was 5 years old and at school. The family of 9 lived at 12 Lombard Street living in just 1 room. The house was shared by 6 families (there were a total of 23 people living in the house). There was a pawn shop next door at No. 11. His grandfather Patrick Power, a master farrier and his eldest sister Alice lived close by in No. 16. In 1904 when Joseph was 8 his father Patrick Leckey dies of bronchitis and was buried in Glasnevin cemetery. By 1911 the family moved to 2 rooms in No. 20 Lombard Street. At this stage Joseph is working as a drapers assistant and all of his sisters are working as biscuit packers in Jacobs Biscuit Factory.

Sometime before 1917, Joseph was courting Josephine Delany. He may have met her in her fathers tobacconist shops as he was working as a tobacco salesman around this time these premises were located in North Earl Street and Westland Row Station. Josephine and several of her sisters moved to Merrion Row after 1916 when their home and shop in North Earl Street was destroyed. In 1917 Joseph makes a trip to the US occupation listed as tobacco worker. He appears to have stayed for about 2 years in Philadelphia working as a salesman. His address in Philadelphia was 2231 Page Street. In March 1919, Josephine died of TB. Joseph returns from the US via Liverpool in August of that year. Figure 36: Joe & Alo
Four years later he married Josephines sister Alacoque on 3rd June 1923 in St. Andrews Church, Westland Row. The witnesses are John Leonard and Eileen Delany (Janes sister). At the time of his marriage he was living with his family at 11 Lower Sandwich Street. The couple set up house at Cathrena 9a Appian Way, Ranelagh, Dublin 6. . When he married in 1923 Joseph was a salesman (not sure if tobacco still). Figure 35: 2231 Page Street, Philadelphia Josephs sister Jane moved in with them and lived with them until her death (probably in 1930 when Josephs mother Margaret died).

Sometime later Joseph goes to work in Brown Thomass in Grafton Street. The Dublin store was opened by Hugh Brown at 16 Grafton Street in 1848. The following year with James Thomas they expanded into No.17. By the mid-1850s they had also bought number 15 and enlarged the shop further. The company was purchased by Harry Gordon Selfridge in 1919 and operated as a branch of Selfridge Provincial Stores until 1933 when it was sold to John McGuire, who had made his name in Clerys.
Joe was a passionate gardener and won prizes for his roses at shows in the Mansion House. Figure 45: Alo & Pam Leckey In the early 1970s, Bettys sister Mary Horan came to live with the family and remained until 1980. Betty became ill in the autumn of 1975 and underwent surgery for a suspected ulcer. However, it was discovered that she had stomach cancer and she died at home on 31st January 1976. She was buried in St. Fintans Cemetery in Sutton, Co. Dublin. After Bettys death, Gerry relied heavily on the Wall family for support and Rita Wall, Bettys sister looked after Pam after school until such time as she went to secondary school. Gerry remarried in 1980 and retired at age 60 in 1984. During his retirement he taught Spanish at night in the local parish hall and indulged his two great passions history and music.
