Jose Silva Ms. Bell English IV 31 August 2013 Research Paper: Wolverine The first ever comic book was published in 1897. Comic books were very popular when they first started getting published. People liked comic books for their images and funny lines. Most comic books dont always use proper English. For example, they use slang a lot of the time. But they succeed in using imagery and different kinds of irony to capture the effects of the comic. Businesses would get their advertisement in the comic book to see if they could get higher sales for their goods from the people who are reading the comics. But, I could imagine that people wouldnt be reading the advertisements instead of the pictures. The majority of the population that read comic books were children or adolescence, they were more interested in reading comic books instead of actual books. This is because children would never be eager to read 100+ paged books that have no pictures or any action. But there are two big companies that create these comic books that people love, Marvel and Detective Comics or DC. In the 1900s, the comics that everybody was reading were everywhere, in magazines, and newspapers. The comics that were being printed in the early 1900s were usually funny. Thats how they got the nickname of the funnies. But towards the mid-1900s, the term comics the term started to become more well-known and more popular.

When superheroes started coming out in comic books were in the Golden Age in the 1930-1950s. The first superhero they introduced was Superman for DC comic in 1938. Just one year later, they brought Batman into DC. After these superheroes took off, superheroes started to becoming very popular and it a revolution for other superheroes to take off as well. These superheroes of the Golden Age were Wonder Woman, Captain America, The Flash, and The Green Lantern. It wasnt until the late 1980s and the early 1990s comics were considered collectors items. People started to collect them instead of actually reading them. They became the top collecting item in the United States. James (Wolverine) Howlett was born in the 1800s as the second son of wealthy land owners. His parents were John and Elizabeth Howlett from Alberta, Canada. As a child, James father was really sick and ending up dying from diseases. His mother was institutionalized after the death of her first son, John Jr., and she would always neglect James because of it. When James was growing up, he had two friends. A girl named Rose was brought in from town to accompany James, and a boy nicknamed Dog was the son of the groundskeeper. The Groundskeeper was Thomas Logan. But Thomas was an alcoholic and would abuse his own son. As the children reached there adolescent years, Dog would start to do a series of unwanted events towards Rose. After James told his father about Dogs actions, Thomas and Dog Logan had to leave the Howlett estate. Thomas Logan invaded the Howlett estate drunk with his son trying to take Elizabeth Howlett with them. Elizabeth Howlett was a former lover of Thomas. Before they got away, John came out to stop them from taking Elizabeth. Thomas shot him down, but when this was

happening, James walked in the room and saw everything. For the first time, James mutation manifested. James acted out on anger; his claws extended from the back of his hands and attacked the intruders, killing Thomas and scarring Dogs face with three claw marks. Elizabeth being emotionally disturbed, she committed suicide from the same gun Thomas used to kill John. When having nobody left in his family, James ran away with Rose. Dog was already psychopath and was down the path of darkness in his heart. Dog decided to hunt down James, but James decided to take on the name Logan to hide identity. Damon Lindelof was the writer of the 2006 comic book miniseries Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk. But Damon didnt just write comic books, he created the storyline, the characters, and the first two episodes of Lost in 2004. He took over as the head writer of the show. Lindelof was born on April 24, 1973 in Teaneck, New Jersey. Hes currently married to Heidi Fugeman with one child. He has been married since May 28, 2005. Leinil Francis Yu is a Filipino comic book artist who began working for the American market through Whilce Portacios studio. He was born on July 31, 1977. Yu worked as an artist, a comic book inker, and a colorist. He also did the artwork of The Punisher. Both of Lindelof and Yu worked together to create one of the best comic book miniseries in the 2000s. This miniseries was called The Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk. There were only six issues of the whole miniseries. The comic that I read was The Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk. This miniseries as you can tell is about the Wolverine fighting and trying to capture the Hulk. But the Wolverine has trouble trying to succeed capturing him

This comic starts off by having Wolverine on the floor waking up. He just fought the Hulk. But Hulk tore his body in half. I dont know how he could have survived that. The Hulk threw Wolverines legs up four miles up a mountain. Then, the comic goes into a flashback about how Wolverine got into the situation that his is in. The flashback starts off as Logan (Wolverine) talking to Nick Fury, the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. Nick Fury brought in Logan to talk about Bruce Banner (Hulk). Bruce Banner and Dr. Jennifer Walters were the big brains on their Super-Soldier research and development. They ended up being really close and Dr. Walters couldnt believe what has happened to Bruce. As S.H.I.E.L.D. presumed Bruce dead, they found a piece of his Hulk droppings. Dr. Walters doesnt trust Logan enough to go out and hunt down Bruce for them. Since this mission is supposed to classified, Dr. Walters doesnt trust Logan because she thinks that Xavier (Founder of the X-Men) would read into Logans mind and find out about this mission. But since Logans skeleton is covered by Adamantium, Xavier cant pick out his thoughts as he can with other people around the world. S.H.I.E.L.D. tried attacking Bruce before but didnt work. They have tried to nuke him, but he ended up surviving. After the attack, Bruce turned furious and started to attack other people. Nick Fury found the piece of Hulk crap, the day prior they talked to Logan. In the jar, there was a persons finger. They concluded that he was eating the people that he killed, and he killed more than 800 people. One of the other scientist help find a scent for Logan to track down Bruce. The scent took him to Tibet. But when Logan got to Tibet, he noticed that there werent any women in the

village. But he finally picked up Bruces scent leading up to the mountains. When Logan found Bruce up in a cave, he saw that he has holding all the women from the village as his slaves. At the end of comic, Logan was beginning to fight with the Hulk. But my opinion of this comic was that I really liked it. Most likely Im going to finish this miniseries and look at some other Wolverine comics in the future. I think it should have gotten into the action a little sooner and should have showed more of them fighting. But in the end, this comic was a very good comic book.
