Los Angeles Principal Residency Network Fieldwork Log

Your fieldwork log documents your leadership experiences outside of the cohort meetings. To the extent that you both broaden and deepen your administrative activities, you will prepare yourself for the role of an educational leader. Breadth will be fairly easy for you to monitor; make certain you include experiences in each of the five LA PRN Strands. Depth will depend on the leadership skill you use while participating with each activity. Leading a group of stakeholders requires greater skill than participating as an observer. You will be given a rubric for self assessment, so that you can monitor the leadership level of your work at your school. Directions 1. Remember always that the LAPRN mission is to transform schools for social justice. Stay focused on that purpose as you work with your Mentor Principal to design leadership experiences. 2. Review your Strengths/Needs Assessment regularly to maintain your focus on the areas you need to develop. Work with your Mentor Principal to design leadership experiences that will develop your needs. 3. Record entries in the fieldwork log, daily, weekly or monthly. 4. Reference the LA PRN rubric to ensure that you are deepening your leadership experiences. 5. Reflective practice leads to personal transformation. Reflect after each Fieldwork Log entry. Celebrate your successes as you develop stronger leadership skills and/or redesign your planned activities for greater depth. 6. Review your log periodically with your mentor principal. 7. Submit your log to Albert Jones and Irene Herrera-Stewart three times a year: December, March and June.

STRAND: Leadership and Vision: Vision Development Ensure that your experiences during your residency replicate or mirror some of the examples noted below. Shadow an administrator and interview two administrators (one site administrator and one district administrator). January 2013 During one of the Mentoring Club meetings, I shared CST data on our two target student subgroups that reflected Far Below Basic scores in ELA & MATH. This was a precursor to an intervention strategy we came up with to help these struggling students

be part of either club. There are applications to fill out as well, and when we go on field trips, we make sure to have field trip slips filled out with pertinent information in case of an emergency.

In order to prepare for this professional development session, we had to generate reports from our Secondary Information System (SIS). We aggregated data that was tailored to the two particular sub groups of students.

January March 2013

In an effort to participate and contribute to our schools shared vision and for the achievement of all of our students, I shared qualitative data on where many of our students are struggling and what is working for them in the classroom.

The qualitative data are surveys/notes that are filled out by the students themselves. These notes indicate where and what students are struggling with and what they like about their classes. This information was provided to our entire faculty and was also shared with them via email.

Experience
Met with Mentor Principal and school faculty to share ILP. This was a precursor to the beginning/execution of ILP.

Evidence/Documents Including journal entry or part of journal entry related to experience when appropriate
I have met with my MP many times through out the year to review and revisit my ILP. At the beginning of our current school year, I met with the faculty and provided a brief professional development session where I shared student discipline data from last year. I also invited everyone to work with me towards meeting our schools vision. There were agendas, emails exchanged and a ppt. presentation. Part of being a Dept. Chair and Special Ed. Coordinator requires that I prepare agendas for our weekly PD sessions. With this responsibility, Im also responsible for preparing ppt. presentations and for making sure that all of the teachers in our department take part in the PD sessions. This is verified and carried on with sign-in sheets. I had to prepare an agenda, and made sure that everyone who attended signed in and was accounted for. I had to prepare for the PD by having the website ready and making sure that the video clips were readily accessible for viewing. During and after the PD, all teachers and staff had to fill out a mandatory reflective piece that helped insure that everyone understood their role with the EL population. Every professional development session requires an agenda and sign-in sheet. However, Special Education is vastly legal matters and is often accompanied by district memos and references. In the effort to review and revisit student data on an ongoing basis, Ive also accessed and used My Data to aggregate and disaggregate CST, EL and SLD data. Ive also had to provide this during our WASC visitations. The logistics of this operation were done in person and also via email. Reports were generated from SIS to ensure that only the students who met the testing requirements were selected to participate in the test. Careful consideration was given to coordinating school meals for our testing groups so that they did not waste time and energy. This was done with the support of our paraprofessionals and our Cafeteria Manager.

There were two files shared; which were recommended to use by everyone that welcomed student input and or feedback. Aggregated student discipline data using LAUSDs data banks (My Data, S.I.S., Welligent) as research for the beginning faces of my inquiry based project (ILP). The focus was on student suspensions and it targeted African American students and students with Learning Disabilities.

December 3, 4, 5 and 6th of 2012

Worked with SJS Mentoring Club to aggregate and analyze CST data for our African American students and Students with Learning Disabilities.

The reports generated were specifically for our two targeted subgroup of students, but that had a FBB on ELA and MATH of the previous year. Our Mentoring Club has enough members, which gave way for members to work with a partner. Each couple of mentors tackled a grade level. Our project also aggregated and analyze CST data for potential student mentors. Separate reports were generated that targeted PROFICIENT AND ADVANCE levels on CST ELA and MATH. This is a data-proven system that has the potential evaluate, support and improve our schools instructional programs and to help drive professional development with and for our staff. We participated in a web-based training around the WASC process. We met in Ms. Alonzo's classroom (2-203). We followed along with the presentation handouts and took notes electronically to save paper. This helped us evaluate our instructional program prior to our WASC visitation. We also took a greener approach and incorporated technological tools (desktop pc and ipads) to give way to a wider access to our schools quantitative data and demographics. There were several Apple representatives at our school site to provide support. There was a power point presentation used to showcase the features and practical uses of the I-pad in the classroom. As part of my job description, Ive held several parent conferences where Ive heard and handled parents with comments, questions, concerns and complaints. There is a paraprofessional schedule. It was provided to both principals, all paraprofessionals and to general education teachers. It is posted in our special education office. Every IEP meeting goes on record via the IEP document. We also require sign-in sheets. Most recently, Ive had to resort to implementing a schedule system due to a higher level of assigned duties. On another level, parents concerns are documented in writing and referred to our principals for revision.
