Why Drivers of Pastel Cars May Break Down By Paul Marston Transport Correspondent

Buyers of the blue cars lack imagination, those choosing silver are pompous, while cars in pastel shades such as beige are probably taking their owner to a psychiatrist, according to a study published today. Psychologists employed by the RAC analyzed the color preference of more than a thousand drivers and concluded that they revealed personality traits far more clearly than choice of clothes or type of house. Owners of beige , lilac, lime or other pastel cars were found to be much likelier to suffer from depression than those opting for other colors. One in five admitted to a depressive episode during the past three years, compared with one in 25 drivers of green or red cars, and almost one in 40 of those favouring black, blue or silver. Similarly, pastel motorist were twice as likely to consider themselves victims of road rage. Eighty per cent said they had been a target for aggressive behavior in the last year, compared with only cent of green vehicle buyers, 38 per cent of white, and 40 per cent of blue or silver. Pastel owners were among the least satisfied with their car color. Barely 60 per cent said they would opt for the same hue again, against more than 80 per cent of those who had backed red, silver, blue or black. The most dissatisfied were drivers who had plumped for white. Less than half were inclined to do so again, citing problem with keeping the car clean. Red and blue were the most popular choices, through green and silver were increasingly fashionable. Conrad king, the RACs consultant psychologist, said: Drivers may think that they are cocooned when behind the wheel of a car, but in reality their choice of color sends a clear signal to other motorist.
