1 Chemistry - Assignment II - 2013 1.

An electron is conned to a linear region with a length of the same order as the diameter of an atom (about 100 pm). Calculate the minimum uncertainty in its position and speed. 2. Using the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, calculate x for each of the following. (a) An electron with v = 0.100m/s (b) A baseball (mass=145 g) with v = 0.100m/s. 3. A simple model for the Hydrogen atom would be to assume that it is a solid sphere of mass M (the Thomson model for the atom) and Radius R and use the Bohr quantization condition. Show that the possible energy levels are En = 5n2 h2 /(16 2 M R2 ), where n is a quantum number. Derive an expression for the wave length of the photon for transition from n1 to n2 . Evaluate the answer numerically for M = mass of the proton and n changing from 1 to 2, with R = 1 A. For what value of n would the transition n + 1 to n have a wave length around 5000 A? 4. A model for the rotational motion of a diatomic molecule A B is to think of a single particle of mass = mA mB /(mA + mB ) following a circular path of radius R where R is the bond length of the diatomic molecule. Assuming the rotation to take place in a plane, and using the Bohr quantization condition, nd the allowed rotational energy levels of the molecule.
