Walker School News

SEPTEMBER 2013
900 S. 119th St. West Allis, WI 53214 414-604-4700

Dear Walker Families: Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year! On behalf of the faculty and staff at Walker School, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you. We hope that you have had time to spend relaxing and enjoying the relationships that are very important to our lives. School staff has been busy this summer preparing Walker School for all of us. Our custodial crew has cleaned and painted every inch of the building around the installation of 8 new doors. We are very excited about the new doors because they will make moving around each learning environment easier, make each space more open and comfortable, but most of all, kids will be able to collaborate and learn in additional ways. This year our district/school motto is Every Child Counts, which sums up our mission and the reason all of our classrooms will be Next Generation Learning Communities (NxGLC). We want this to be more than just a theme, but rather the way we do business every day.

We will be hosting Parent Information Night Wednesday, September 11th from 4:00 to 8:30 P.M. We will get exact times out to you as soon as we can. Each classroom will be open for you to conference with your childs teachers. PTA is sponsoring a pizza dinner, so you can spend as much time as you want at school and feed your family as well. We have a totally new PTA this year and we would love to have your support as they provide a great deal to the staff and students at Walker. Please log on and befriend us on Facebook so that you will get all messages immediately to your email. We can be found at @ Walker Elementary West Allis. We will continue the phone messenger and paper copies of newsletters etc. This is just another way we can keep you informed!!!

Seasonal Asthma Alert

The falling of multicolored leaves from maple to elm tree, the crackling of fires in fireplaces and pits, and the sound of heaters kicking on for the first frosty nights are all familiar reminders that autumn has arrived. Although the sights, smells, and sounds are a delight to many, other who suffer from asthma may find these seasonal events cumbersome. The truth is that autumn triggers several seasonal allergies that can lead to asthma attacks. Smoke from fires, molds, trees, and pollens fill the air as the wind blows. Home windows are closed to the brisk breezes, and homes stagnate with dust, molds, and without fresh air exchange. What can be done to reduce these triggers? Good house cleaning including the ducts, vacuuming carpets, washing off molds and using asthma friendly products could be a start to a healthier season. Questions and concerns

During the year questions and concerns often arise regarding your childs progress in school. When this happens please contact the teacher to resolve the situation. Each teacher has a voice mailbox which is checked daily. It is helpful if you include in your message a good time for the teacher to contact you along with a brief explanation of your concern. Teachers are happy to meet with parents to discuss issues. Please make an appointment to do so. The time immediately before and after school is busy and many meetings are scheduled during those times. Making an appointment in advance ensures you the teacher will be available to meet. Teachers are unable to talk with parents while students are in class. Addressing concerns directly with your childs teacher allows all parties involved to have a clear understanding of the issue and work toward a solution. If after working together a solution can not be found feel free to contact the school principal to help you work toward a solution.
