1. (a) Find the distance between (3, − 2) and the line 4 x − 3 y + 2 = 0 .


(b) Find the equation of circle with centre (3, − 2) and is tangent to the line
4x − 3y + 2 = 0 .

2. Given a circle x 2 + y 2 − 4 x + 8 y − 36 = 0 . Suppose (4, 2) is the mid-point of a


chord.
(a) Find the length of the chord.

3. Given two circles C1 : x 2 + y 2 + 2 x − 5 = 0 and C 2 : x 2 + y 2 + 4 x − 6 y + 12 = 0 .


(a) Find an equation of circle C which passes through (−1, 2) and the
intersecting points of C1 and C 2 .
(b) Find the centre and radius of circle C.

4. Given a line L : y = mx + c (where m > − 2 ) and a circle


C : x 2 + y 2 − 2x + 4 y + 3 = 0 .
Suppose that L is a tangent to the circle and it passes
through (−1, 2) .
(a) Express c in terms of m.
(b) Hence find the values of m and c.

5. In the figure, the equation of circle is C : x 2 + y 2 − Dx + 2 = 0 where D > 0.


L1 : y = x + c (where c ≥ 0 ) and L2 : x + y = d (where d > 0) are two tangents to
the circle.
