Guide for Organism Identification Source? Perform gram stain and plate to appropriate media for that source What is the normal flora for that site? What are potential pathogens for that site? Gram stain result? Expected growth based on the gram stain result? Describe growth o Which media does org grow on? Making it gram pos, gram neg, or yeast? o Description of colony type-color, size, texture, growth characteristics o Number each isolate with appropriate description based on growth characteristics o Description of growth characteristics including hemolysis, lactose fermentation, etc. Gram stain each colony type if necessary Utilize rapid/presumptive biochemicals for ID (latex, catalse, indol, oxidase) Designate each isolate as either normal flora, potential pathogen, or pathogen Correlate gram stain with culture result and account for each org in gram stain that did not grow (possible anaerobes, non-viable org, etc) Perform full ID and sensitivity if applicable Report growth
