• Conjunctions ( when, then, but, so)
(Refer to PowerPoint 1, Conjunction Junction Video, Learning Sheet 2,
and BEG pg 164-167).

- Conjunctions are words and phrases used to connect sentences or
clauses.
- When is used to show time.
- E.g. The bell rang. Ali was sleeping.
Ali was sleeping when the bell rang. / When Ali was sleeping, the bell
rang.
- Then is used to show sequence of actions.
- E.g. I washed my hands. I cut the fruits.
I washed my hands, then I cut the fruits.
- But is used to compare two ideas.
- E.g. The test was easy. Half the class failed the test.
The test was easy but half the class failed.
- So is used to show cause and effect.
- E.g. I wanted to sit in the front of the balcony. I ordered my tickets
early.
I wanted to sit in the front of the balcony so I ordered my tickets
early.
• Prepositions (to, up, off)

(E.g. I went to the clinic because I fell ill. / He wanted to meet me

- Preposition ‘off’
(E.g. I fell off my bed as I was sleeping last night. / The thief ran
off before they could call the police. )

times, people first discovered *magnetism when they found some naturally
magnetic pieces of rock in the earth called lodestone. Loadstones have a lot
of iron in them. Other materials can be turned into magnets too. *Nickel and
Magnets have north and south poles. The north pole of one magnet will
repel, or push away, the north pole of another magnet. The south pole of one
magnet will repel the south pole of another magnet. However, if you put the
north pole of one magnet near the south pole of another magnet, you will feel

Most of the magnets we use are made from iron. The refrigerator
magnets we use are called permanent magnets. There's a magnet in the seal
on the inside of your refrigerator door. It holds the refrigerator door closed
when you are not looking for a snack or a cold drink. Some cabinet doors have
magnetic latches too. Can you think of any other places where magnets have
practical uses?
