Reading Comprehension

Name: __________________ ( ) Date: ___________

Class: Primary 2____________

Please go to PowerPoint 5 and Online Lesson on Magnets first before

reading the passage to answer the questions.

Magnets are materials that attract pieces of iron or steel. In ancient

times, people first discovered *magnetism when they found some naturally

magnetic pieces of rock in the earth called lodestone. Loadstones have a lot

of iron in them. Other materials can be turned into magnets too. *Nickel and

*cobalt can also make good magnets.

Magnets have north and south poles. The north pole of one magnet will

repel, or push away, the north pole of another magnet. The south pole of one

magnet will repel the south pole of another magnet. However, if you put the

north pole of one magnet near the south pole of another magnet, you will feel

an attractive force. So opposite poles are attracted to each other.

13
Most of the magnets we use are made from iron. The refrigerator

magnets we use are called permanent magnets. There's a magnet in the seal

on the inside of your refrigerator door. It holds the refrigerator door closed

when you are not looking for a snack or a cold drink. Some cabinet doors have

magnetic latches too. Can you think of any other places where magnets have

practical uses?

Adapted from: http://education.jlab.org/reading/magnets.html

Glossary

Magnetism: the attraction of iron in a magnet by another magnet

Nickel: a silver-white hard metal commonly used in rechargeable batteries

Cobalt: created from nickel to be a tough and shiny silver-white metal and also

used in batteries

14
1. What are magnets?

2. Name another word in the passage that has the same meaning as

‘naturally magnetic pieces of rock’.

3. What are two other metals that can be made into good magnets?

4. *What would you feel when you put two like poles of a magnet

together?

5. Why do you think your refrigerator door is able to stay closed?
