Semester Long Course Credit: Social Studies (1/2)

Course Description: This course provides an in-depth survey of United Nations function and role in the world, economics and international trade in a global economy, and environmental issues as they relate to an interdependent world. As a result of successful completion of this course: The student will meet the following Power Standards: Component 1.2-Understand the purposes, organization, and functions of governments, laws, and political systems. Component 1.3-Understand the purposes and organization of international relationships and U.S. foreign policy. Component 3.3-Understand the geographic context of global issues. Component 4.4-Use history to understand the present and plan for the future. Component 5.1-Use critical reasoning skills to analyze and evaluate positions. Component 5.2-Use inquiry based research. Component 5.4-Create a product that uses social studies content to support a thesis and present the product in an appropriate manner to a meaningful audience. Components of the course include: The United Nations History and Development Organization Structure and Function Role and Perception in Media Agencies Class Guidelines: Be in class on time We will follow the attendance policy as outlined in your student handbook Students may not make up work missed from unexcused absences Be prepared to learn Must bring a writing utensil, binder, and homework to class every day Complete all assignments by the deadline set by the teacher Students will be issued one homework extension pass a term. used once for a one night full credit extension. Homework must be turned in at the beginning of the period. Produce quality work with academic integrity Allow others to participate in all class activities In this class we will engage in critical discussion and debate, all opinions should be presented and received respectfully. Inappropriate language, gestures, and actions will not be tolerated.

Class grade will be based on the following guideline: Assessment: 80% Classwork: 20% Tests Classwork/Homework Quizzes Participation (see attached rubric) Projects (major and minor) Note: Grades are not averaged between quarters, but are a 19 day cycle which coincides with CORE/Choice

Extra Help: Students are responsible for completing all work assigned. It is the students responsibility to arrange for additional time or assistance if needed. Teachers schedule will be posted in the classroom; students may sign up for extra help or to make up work before or after school based on teacher avalibility, during CORE/Choice, or period three (planning period). Remember: if you sign up to meet with the teacher the appointment must be confirmed face-to-face. Do not assume simply signing up constitutes confirmation and guaranteed availability.
