Photo Challenges or How to Win!

Each week we will have a different photo challenge. There will be a theme assigned to you, and you the student will shoot MULTIPLE IMAGES for each photo challenges . Make sure what you shoot is something you care about. I will compile all the Photo Challenge entries, pick the best one photo out of the two that you turn in (depending on the assignment) and make an online web gallery. Students will critique each others work, and then we will vote. In order to qualify for voting, you must turn your photos in on the day it is due, NO EXCEPTIONS! Credit will be given for late work, but late work will not be admitted into the photo challenges. So stay on top of your work! Photos must be images THAT YOU TOOK, if you did not press the shutter release button on the camera, than you did not take the picture. The cameras we use in class all have self-timers, as do most point and shoots. IF I FIND OUT YOU TURNED IN WORK THAT IS NOT YOUR OWN, YOU WILL GET A ZERO FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT, AND PARENTS WILL BE CONTACTED.

PHOTO CHALLENGES OR HOW TO turn them in!

1.Each student creates a flickr account. 2. Students upload each photo to flickr 3. Copy and paste the flickr URLs to the assignment post, which can always be found on the right hand side of the blog page.

The Blog Or, have you read the blog?, its on the blog or just BLOG.
You are responsible for every single thing that I post on this website. It is a private, classonly website. If you have questions about an assignment, make sure you look and the blog post BEFORE asking someone. Every question about what is required for a specific assignment is on the blog. Your peers might not know the answer. I create the blog to save time and to eliminate confusion.

you see this? it means a C no matter what. What I look for when I grade your photos. How to Get an A & BLURRY PHOTOS ARE BAD, BAD, BAD! In order to receive an A in this class, you the student need to have elements of all of the following listed below, especially the something to say with your photos one. A blurry picture can never get anything better than a 75, and thats with everything else there. A picture without any of the below standards considered will receive a 50.

I. COMPOSITION: What choices did you make as a photographer as far as where the camera is placed in relation to the subject.(What you are taking a picture of) These include: Rule of Thirds, Framing devices, Get Close, Leading lines, and Finding a unique angle on things. II. PHOTOSHOP (OR OTHER PHOTO EDITING PROGRAM) ADJUSTMENTS: ALL PHOTOS NEED A LITTLE BIT OF ADJUSTMENT. Even if all you are doing is changing the white balance, rotating the image a hair, cropping it or adjusting brightness and contrast, every image needs a little help to become the masterpiece it was meant to become. Not doing any Photoshop to an image will result in a poor grade. III. BLURRY PHOTOS: This is the most important standard by which I grade. A blurry photo is not meeting the most basic standard of photography. YOU CANNOT CORRECT BLUR IN PHOTOSHOP. The only option is to take it again. DO NOT TURN IN BLURRY PHOTOGRAPHS. What we want to aim for is to say something with our photographs, but if you follow the standards above, it will help you do much better on your photo challenge grades. Comments Anytime I call for students to write comments, critiques, or evaluations, all of these goes towards their monthtly comment grade. Each week I check the quality and amount of comments and give you a grade based on the level answer and the amount of comment each student gave.

Rubrics for Critique and Informational Tutorials describe exactly what I am looking for.

Behavior and Photo Passes Or, Dont be a jerk, Dude.

In this class, you will be allowed to shoot anywhere on campus, except for the bathrooms and the outer fields, for up to 20 minutes.ONLY TWO PEOPLE ALLOWED OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM AT A TIME. Partners must stick together. Failure to report back before the time on the pass will result in one warning, then for each infraction you lose photo pass privileges for one week. IN THIS CLASS YOU ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO TAKE PICTURES AT HOME.THE USE OF A DIGITAL CAMERA for use outside of CLASS IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED.

We are a professional learning environment, one that is supposed to emulate the world of work. Because of this, we will act like professional at all times, including the hallways. Profanity, sliding down stairs, running in the hallways, taking pictures of people without their permission, or mis behaving in the hallways will not be tolerated.
Failure to adhere to the above professional conduct rules will result in one warning, then a loss of hall pass privileges for one week for each additional infraction.

Tardy & Attendance -Or, missing lots of class = FAIL

Being on time to Photo class is essential in everyones success. If you miss a discussion, or important information, you will not be informed. Attention in each class will be closely monitored by one teacher in the building, and your parent will be contacted after three occurrences of tardiness or absence, unexused. Skipping classes, or excessive absences in this class makes for a confused, and lost individual. Excessive absences always leads to falling behind on coursework. Falling behind in coursework means you cannot participate in Photo Challenges, and you simply get a lot less out of class that way. We need to be dependable, responsible people, and thats only way we will all succeed as a class. Pet Peeves or Really? or Are You kidding me? Things I shouldnt have to say, but youd be surprised.

Foods and/or drink are NOT allowed in this room or in any computer lab. Water is okay, as long as it is away from computers. Do not mess with anyones computer, pranks or turning off peoples computers in the middle of a work sessions, will result in detentions, referrals and loss of

computer pass privileges. We are here to support each others as the professionals we are. Lining up at the door is a waste of your time and sends me the message that you do not care about this class, or me. WE WORK BELL TO BELL Texting is strictly forbidden, your phone will end up in a bag. You may listen to music, on the computer, through online streaming sites, or through iPods, mp3 players, etc. but please BRING YOUR OWN HEADPHONES.
