Teacher models the use of a variety of different tones when speaking using a microphone.

Shared Reading Read the story from pg 1-4. Focus on different tones for characters. Use different children to come out and use microphone to practice saying parts of the story in different places paying attention to talking marks. Ask students what they know about talking marks? Discuss how talking marks show us who is talking and what they are saying Ask students to Think pair Share about what they predict will happen in the text.

Reading groups Make headband characters from story in groups of 3

Reflection Time Ask students to share their headbands and provide a description of their character

In groups of 3 from previous session students will devise a role-play based on the text using headbands

Session 3

Students use a variety of different tones when speaking using a microphone.

Re-read the story from beginning to end to promote fluency and expression. Use punctuation in text to only say the speaking parts.

In groups of 3 from previous sessions students revisit role play and finalise their performance using props

Circle time: Ask students to reflect on the text using microphone, focus on a variety of different speaking tones and reasons for using microphone Ask the groups who are willing to share their performance with the class

Session 4

Teacher records students speaking in a variety of tones and plays back response to class. Discuss use of talking marks

Re-read the story from beginning to end to promote fluency and expression. Retell events in order using grammar cards

Students revisit role play and record their final performance on IPad

Session 5

Teacher records students speaking in a variety of tones and plays back response to class. Discuss use of talking marks

Re-read text as a whole class for enjoyment

Students watch roleplays on interactive white board and give positive feedback to each other

Circle time: Discuss performing? What did you notice? Discuss use of different tones and why this is important Circle time: Discuss what is was like watching own performance, what did they notice and wonder
