Grade 7 DVD Cover Unit 1 Formative Task

Unit title: Breaking Barriers Significant Concept: Realize that stereotyping may influence our thinking and limit our choices. AOI: Environments FORMATIVE TASK Design a DVD cover, front and back, for an action film featuring a non-stereotypical superhero. Writing standards: 3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well structured event sequences. a) Engage and orient the reader by establishing a context and point of view and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally and logically. b) Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, description, to develop experiences, events, and/or characters. c) Use a variety of transition words, phrases, and clauses to convey sequence and signal shifts from one time frame or setting to another. d) Use precise words and phrases, relevant descriptive details, and sensory language to capture the action and convey experiences and events. e) Provide a conclusion that follows from and reflects on the narrated experiences or events. 4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization and styles are appropriate to task, purpose and audience. Language standards 1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. b) Choose among simple, compound, complex and compound-complex sentences to signal differing relationships among ideas. c) Place phrases and clauses within a sentence, recognizing and correcting misplaced and dangling modifiers. 2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. a) Use comma to separate coordinate adjectives b) Spell correctly. Requirements Hook the reader in an interesting way. Develop character in a short time, but do not give away too much of the plot. Genre should be clear and a number of techniques description, cliff hanger, shock tactics, etc, should be used to persuade the reader to watch it. The front cover design should reflect your storyline. Advice: Look back over the blurbs/DVD covers analysed in class and consider what makes them effective before beginning your own. Ensure you plan thoroughly. This requires elements of narrative (character, plot, etc) The superhero must be clear to the reader through your description, although the superhero itself should go against all stereotypes studied in class. As this is a writing assessment, consider structure along with SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar). You may use a dictionary and/or a thesaurus. Think about colour, positioning, font, etc, all other components needed to make the DVD cover as realistic as possible. Grading: This is a writing assessment and will be marked over all 3 criterion out of an overall 30 marks. This will be your summative task for this quarter. The grading breakdown will follow the provided rubric.

The work is consistently wellorganized, clear and coherent and the ideas being expressed build on each other in a sophisticated manner. The student integrates critical apparatus correctly and effectively. I have confidently written in clearly defined paragraphs, that build on one another, creating fluency through the choice of my connectives. I use a complete range of sentence structures to engage the reader effectively, creating intrigue whilst not giving too much of the plot away. The student employs a wide and effective range of appropriate vocabulary, very infrequent errors do not hinder communication.
