Animal Studies Essential Standards:

4.L.1: Understand the effects of environmental changes, adaptations and behaviors that enable animals (including humans) to survive in changing habitats. Goals/Objectives: Students will successfully set up a habitat for a fiddler crab to survive in. Materials Needed: Set up: Create 6 stations in parts of the classroom. Each station should have all the necessary elements for the fiddler crab habitat set up with printed instructions. Fiddler Crabs Elements for fiddler crab habitat

Procedures: Break students into 6 groups. 1 group for each habitat to be built. Model how to set up one habitat to the whole class Assign a manager in each group that will be responsible for making sure group is following instructions. Assign each group to a habitat station Give groups approximately 15 minutes to set up habitats Circulate throughout the room to ensure groups are on task Conclude the lesson by having students write in their journals the essential elements to the habitat

No assessment or differentiation is necessary for this lesson. This is a lesson that prepares the students for future learning next week on the fiddler crabs.
