NATURAL EXFOLIATION FOR SKIN RENEWAL A JOURNEY OF 4 TO 6 WEEKS

The epidermis (from the Greek epi, meaning on top and derma, the skin) forms the skins outer structure and serves a protective function. However, the part we can see, the corneum layer, represents only a tiny part of this stratified squamous epithelium. This is the end result of the keratinization process and the culmination of a 4 to 6-week journey for the keratinocytes. Skin renewal is a balance between the loss of superficial cells: corneocytes, and the entry of new epidermal cells in a differentiation process.

Of course, the shedding of cells from the skins surface must be compensated for by the renewal of the epidermis which is carried out by the keratinocytes (85% of epidermis cells). They have two properties that they implement one after the other: the ability to actively divide and to differentiate themselves. The keratinocytes divide in the renewal layer, or stratum germinativum (basal layer). The deepest layer of the epidermis, it is formed by a unique row of keratinocytes linked together and to the underlying dermis by desmosomes. Every keratinocyte produces two identical daughter cells. One remains in its position to divide once again while the other cell migrates towards the upper layer, or stratum spinosum, the differentiating layer, where it will undergo morphological and biochemical changes.

The differentiating layer, eight to fifteen cells deep, is the thickest layer in the epidermis. This is where the keratinocytes grow and become flatter. In a first stratum formed by 6 layers of cells, the stratum spinosum or Malpighian layer, the cells activity is mainly focused on generating keratin, a fibrous protein which gradually fills the entire cell. Moving towards the upper layers of the stratum granulosum (granular layer), the keratinocytes become even flatter and their nuclei start to degenerate. They pour a cement, made up of lipids, cholesterol, free saturated fatty acids and ceramides into the extracellular space to strengthen cohesion between the cells, thereby also contributing to the epidermis barrier role. Having made their way to the uppermost part of the epidermis, the cornified layer or stratum corneum, the keratinocytes become corneocytes, flat, keratin-filled cells. This water-insoluble protein accounts for 95% of the epidermal proteins and, in part, endows the epidermis with its protection function. As a result of the scheduled action of specific enzymes, the corneocytes lose cohesion and detach one by one through the shedding process.

EPIDERMAL DIFFERENTIATION, A BENEFIT FOR THE SKIN

The terminal differentiation of the epidermis leads to the formation of the strong cornified layer. This layer of the epidermis essentially performs the role of skin barrier. The differentiated keratinocytes that form the stratum corneum are attached to one another by mechanical bonds: desmosomes. The intercellular spaces are filled with a hydrophobic lipid substance arranged in multiple layers that keeps the stratum corneum watertight.
1- STRATUM BASALE: proliferation zone. The point at which the epidermis attaches to the basal membrane. 2- STRATUM SPINOSUM: area where the differentiation process begins. 3- STRATUM GRANULOSUM: area producing the horny membrane proteins, cross-linkages of specific enzymes and lipids. 4- STRATUM CORNEUM: area of flat cells with no nuclei, the corneocytes, connected by binding proteins: desmosomes. Mainly made up of water, keratin and lipids. Lipid membrane Expulsion of lipids

pidermal differentiation

Stratum corneum Stratum granulosum Stratum spinosum Stratum germinativum Basal membrane

Removal of corneocytes from the surface of the epidermis is partially caused by environmental factors (rubbing, harsh chemicals, humidity). However, the shedding process is carefully timed and regulated intrinsically. The gradual breakdown of the intercellular bonds under the influence of enzymes or protease. The movements of these enzymes in the extracellular spaces depend on the degree of spontaneous organization of the lipids and the hydration of the corneum layer. This breakdown is also partly linked to the composition and quality of the intercellular lipid substance. The activity of protease enzymes to break down proteins not only leads to the shedding process, but is also important in maintaining the corneum layers water content. Indeed, filaggrin (protease) leads directly to the production of a natural moisturizing factor in the upper layers of the epidermis. The stratum corneum manages to maintain its regular thickness through a constant stream of epidermis cells offsetting the loss of corneocytes on the skins surface. Thus, the shedding and proliferation mechanisms are closely linked to the core of the epidermis.

ENZYMACID: A POWERFUL, DEEP AND LASTING EFFECT

Stunning scientific performance and packed with innovations, the ENZYMACID Treatment is unique in dermo-cosmetics as it is a combination of three peeling technologies, an anti-aging technology and a whitening technology. An alternative to MEDICAL PEELING, this new treatment will act in several ways: powerful, deep and lasting. Mechanical action with immediate removal of superficial layers and dead cells Strong and deep-penetrating chemical action Long-lasting biological action over several weeks Targeted revitalizing action on tired cells Stable lightening effect on skin pigmentation.

MECHANICAL PEELING AND DERMABRASION WITH ALUMINIUM CRYSTALS + IRON GLUCONATE

Microdermabrasion is an exfoliation technique first used by plastic surgeons in 1995 which has since spread to dermatologists and beauty salons. Microdermabrasion consists of mechanically removing the superficial layers of the epidermis and the metabolic waste that has accumulated there, preventing cell renewal. The procedure consists of using a device to spray aluminium oxide microcrystals onto the skin, which are then sucked up along with the dead cells. Aluminium oxide crystals are abrasive agents that provide unrivalled results compared to traditional microbead scrubs. ERICSON LABORATOIRE drew inspiration from this professional procedure to create an exfoliating scrub containing aluminium oxide crystals. This exfoliation with aluminium oxide crystals helps the skin to clear away any dead cells and reactivate cell renewal. It also prepares the skin for chemical peeling as it helps alpha hydroxy acids to penetrate the skin. ERICSON LABORATOIRE has combined aluminium oxide crystals with IRON GLUCONATE for even better results. It helps to exfoliate dead skin cells and hydrate the stratum corneum. It also boosts vitamin C absorption, providing a brightening effect as well as increased collagen production.

ERICSON LABORATOIRE

POWERFUL CHEMICAL PEELING AND HIGHLY-CONCENTRATED acids

Chemical peeling consists of applying an acid solution to the skin promoting cell renewal in order to create new skin. This type of peeling helps to renew the epidermis and has an effect on the skin texture. This result is obtained after a series of sessions of alpha hydroxy acid-based peels: glycolic or salicylic acid, for example. It treats the first signs of skin aging, acts on blotches of various origins (pigment irregularities, actinic patches, post-inflammation pigmentation) and on superficial acne scars. Chemical peeling is the most widely-used technique in dermatology to clear the skin of any surface defects. It gives the skin a whole new look, a brighter complexion, smoother texture and younger-looking appearance. Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) peeling is no longer exclusively found in dermatologists offices, but is now available in beauty salons and for home use.

ALPHA HYDROXY ACIDS

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are acids that possess an alcohol function (hydroxy) in alpha position on the carbon carrying the acid function. This means the molecular structure of AHA is as shown below: R CHOH - COOH AHAs or fruit acids occur naturally in many fruits and plants but also in dairy products where they can play an important role in taste. For example, citric acid that gives oranges and lemons their acidic taste, glycolic acid in sugar cane, lactic acid in fermented milk, etc. Their major cosmetic benefit is in stimulating cell renewal. Nowadays we have a better understanding of their mechanism of action which opens them up to a very wide scope of application. AHAs exert a shedding and hydrating effect. Basically, they cause the forces of cohesion between corneocytes to weaken by acting on the ionic bonds between this type of cell. By lowering the pH, AHAs can change corneocyte cohesion. In this way, they speed up the shedding process on which cell renewal and, to some extent, skin rejuvenation and restoration of the normal regulation of skin hydration depend. If the skin is clogged by dead cells, it no longer protects: by clearing these dead cells away, AHAs allow a new layer of cells to create a barrier against harmful external factors. The shedding effect that characterizes the way AHAs work can only be obtained if there is a sufficiently high concentration of alpha hydroxy acid and this acid is in free form (i.e. not neutralized) in the cosmetic product. The exfoliating effect is accompanied by a speeding up of cell renewal and also boosting of the production of collagen and elastin which provide the skin with its tone and elasticity. At lower concentrations, the usual claim for AHAs concerns their hydrating and softening effect on the skin. AHAs transform the keratin found in the epidermis into amino acids, essential ingredients for hydrated and supple skin. They increase glycosaminoglycan production (which has a strong affinity for water) and therefore the ability to retain water in the skin, which also promotes supple skin.

AHAs IMPROVE SKIN STRUCTURE THROUGH DIFFERENT ACTIONS: Reducing the thickness of the corneum layer Stimulating cell renewal Reinforcing the barrier function Hydrating the epidermis Stimulating glycosaminoglycan production

POWERFUL CHEMICAL PEELING AND HIGHLY-CONCENTRATED ACIDS

Our research laboratories have developed formulas with different concentrations for products intended for professional and for home use. The homeuse products have been formulated with AHA concentrations specially designed to give almost immediate exfoliation results, with no discomfort for the client. On the other hand, the ENZYMACID products designed for treatment administered by professionals have very high AHA concentrations and contain 70% glycolic acid. This high AHA concentration enables professionals to obtain in depth results as the product is absorbed much deeper into the skin. Professionals must be very careful in using this product and clients must protect themselves from the suns rays. The ENZYMACID line of products is unique in its class, as it combines the action of 8 acids that work in synergy in order to reactivate skin renewal. Glycolic, salicylic, lactic, ascorbic, mandelic, tartaric, mucic and citric acid will act in turn on the skin to achieve smoother, brighter, firmer skin, with a tighter texture and even complexion.

GLYCOLIC ACID
It weakens the bonds between dead skin cells and the surface. The dead cells are replaced gradually, leaving softer skin with a more even texture. The small size of the glycolic acid molecule stimulates the renewal of the epidermis and the function of fibroblasts in the production of collagen, elastin and in the biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycans.

SALICYLIC ACID
The exfoliating effect of salicylic acid also acts to dissolve the intercellular cement. It also helps to lower the pH of the corneum layer promoting keratolytic activity and thereby increasing the hydration of the epidermis. Normal shedding of corneocytes from the epidermis surface is regulated in part by plasminogen activators and their inhibitors. When there is an imbalance in these proteases, hyperkeratosis occurs. Salicylic acid leads to an increase in the activators and a decrease in the inhibitors, thereby stimulating the shedding process. Salicylic acid also contains bacteriostatic properties. It has a considerable non-comedogenic action owing to its lipophilic structure. It is also able to limit the chemical chain reactions that form arachidonic acid in cellular membranes, thereby cutting inflammatory reactions.

LACTIC ACID
The soft exfoliation caused by lactic acid continues glycolic acids exfoliation process by breaking the bonds that hold the corneocytes together. Lactic acid is found in the stratum corneum as an important NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor). It is also hygroscopic. It makes the skin suppler and better hydrated.

7
ERICSON LABORATOIRE

CITRIC ACID
It has astringent, exfoliating and regenerating properties. It is recommended for tightening skin texture and evening the complexion. The skin becomes more translucent and brighter.

MANDELIC ACID
It exfoliates gently, activates the divisions of epidermal cells, stimulates collagen and elastin production and thereby boosts the skin elasticity. Antibacterial and brightens skin.

MUCIC ACID
It activates shedding and reduces lines and wrinkles. It regulates hydration and brightens the complexion. Moreover, it displays strong antioxidant and sequestering powers in relation to heavy metals. It plays a role in cell protection.

ASCORBIC ACID
Vitamin C is an enzymatic cofactor involved in a number of physiological reactions (hydroxylation). It is required for collagen synthesis. It also plays a role in metabolizing iron as it facilitates iron absorption. It acts like a powerful antioxidant and its molecules are capable of fighting the effects of free radicals.

TARTARIC ACID
Owing to its keratolytic activity, it is particularly recommended for treatments seeking to prevent the aging process by enabling cells to renew on the skin surface.

ENZYMATIC PEELING WITH LONG-LASTING RESULTS

Enzymatic or protease exfoliators are able to weaken the chemical bonds holding corneocytes together, and to digest keratin proteins. Protease activity is an essential factor in shedding, closely linked to the proliferation of basal cells in the basal layer. The skin becomes softer to the touch and more luminous with no irritation. There is now a new generation of enzymes: namely, STABILIZED PROTEASE.

INNOVATION
This is the result of synthezising immobilized and cross-linked protease from plants. Stabilized protease can penetrate the uppermost layers of the skin owing to its immobilized nature. It retains all its activity due to its cross-linking and stabilization.

9
ERICSON LABORATOIRE

X-PRESSIN, A STABILIZED AND HYPOALLERGENIC ENZYME

The upper layer of the skin is formed by corneocytes with a protein structure. Therefore, it is natural to think that the topical application of protease stimulates the skins exfoliation process. As protease targets the protein-based cement between adjacent cells, its specific mode of action involves a gentle exfoliation. Our laboratories have developed a cross-linked papain molecule with a high molecular weight that preserves its protease activity. Papain is a protease isolated from papaya latex (Carica papaya) known for its use in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. Crosslinking means creating links between the molecular chains. Cross-linked structures are generally prepared using heat and in the presence of a catalyst known as a crosslinking agent. Crosslinking papain enables superficial penetration into the skin and better action on its surface. Crosslinking protects papain from breaking down and increases its thermal stability. After analyzing several mono-, di- and poly- saccharides, sodium alginate was chosen as the stabilizing agent for the papain-carbomer complex. Sodium alginate, a seaweed extract, reduces the potential irritation caused by the enzyme. It is also known for its emollient and soothing action. It is hypoallergenic and nontoxic by nature. This new c h e m i c a l l y and physically modified form of papain retains its protease activity at high temperatures and acts as an exfoliator. X-PRESSIN works best on maintaining the skin pH balance.

X50, GLYCOLIC AND LACTIC ACID CAPSULE (PLGA) DEEP AND LONG-LASTING ACTION
The encapsulation or vectorization of active ingredients is a technology that enhances an active ingredients effectiveness by increasing its bioavailability. More accurately, it helps active ingredients pass more easily through cell membranes by protecting them from degradation caused by skin enzymes. The encapsulation systems are used to: - Ensure gradual release of the active ingredient for a sustained effect, - Protect an active ingredient from the environment: oxygen, isolation from another component in the formula, - Increase the active ingredients stability, - Achieve high concentrations of active ingredients, - Increase the bioavailability of ingredients to improve absorption by the cell, - Target the active ingredient to a cell population, - Promote the release of the active ingredient to the targeted cells. Our laboratories have chosen a DUAL ENCAPSULATION OF GLYCOLIC ACID + LACTIC ACID: PLGA TWO-LAYER CAPSULE, a smart molecule that is able to deliver its regenerating effect to the very heart of cells. Indeed, this capsule is boosted with a LIPOPEPTIDE: combination of PANTOTHENIC ACID and a HEPTAPEPTIDE linked to a copper molecule (Cu). This new technology enables the products to work deeper and to stimulate the production of new collagen and elastic fibres in the dermis.

VIT.C TYPE AA2G, STABILIZED AND MORE EFFECTIVE WITH BRIGHTENING ACTION
VIT.C AA2G is a combination of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) stabilized with a long-duration glucose molecule. The glucose was grafted onto the hydroxyl group of the vitamin C: place of degradation of ascorbic acid. The glucose increases the stability of ascorbic acid when exposed to heat, pH, heavy metals and other degradation agents. VIT.C AA2G, in contact with the skin, reacts with a a-glycosidase. This allows a slow diffusion of vitamin C and thus delivers all of its benefits to the cells.
