GRADUATE CREDIT COURSE APPLICATION Course Title: Critical Reading II: Activating Research Into Action Sponsoring Agency:

Course Registration To register for the course the participants must submit an online registration form located at University of San Diego: http://usd-online.org/studycourse.aspx B. Course Description This course is similar to Critical Reading: Activating Research Into Action using AVIDs Critical Reading Book; however, the skills and strategies have been revised and redeveloped into LiteracyTA.com. Teachers in this course will gain a deeper understanding of the pedagogy of comprehension strategies and critical reading skills in their content areas. Teachers will also learn and be able to implement the methodology of deep reading/critical reading skills, as well as incorporating 21st century skills into the application of these strategies. C. Course Requirements Attend/participate in all required sessions, 30 hours of contact time is required for 2 semester credit hour Explore Before/During/After the Reading strategies. Meet and discuss concepts with colleagues between meetings, through information meetings, telephone calls, study groups, emails, wikis, blogs, school visits, or other forms of connection. Using LiteracyTAs Lesson Plan section, create and Implement a total of 10 lessons. Explore, select, and implement a new 21st Century Teaching Method (found on LiteracyTA.com) for each lesson. Bring evidence/work/reactions/thoughts of applications to share at the meetings. Share outcomes and possible modifications. Write a reflection of the lesson plan. The reflection should also include next steps and questions needing to be addressed to support continued growth. Keep a portfolio of lessons, modifications, and reflections. The team meetings will be annotated with meeting minutes which will be the action log for each meeting recording efforts extended to make connections

between the concepts in the book, readings and the daily practices of being a teacher. (The finished course portfolio should be sent to Allyson Allen no-later-than 14 May 2014.)
