Egyptian Empire Timeline


In 6000BC early people settled in the Nile valley. Egyptians began to use clay and silt from the river to make 6000BC pottery vessels like those in the museum gallery. Around 5000BC many Egyptians farmed sheep and cattle. Some Egyptians grew wheat and barley on the 5000BC fertile land on the Nile valley. Around 4500BC, sails were used on Egyptian ships for the first time. Boats were the main form of transport 4500BC in Ancient Egypt. Around 3500BC craftsmen began to create the first wall paintings using hieroglyphic symbols in the Egyptian 3500BC writing system. You can see some examples of these in Gallery 34 at the museum. Around 3000BC walled towns and villages were built in Egypt. The first buildings were made of mud brick. At 3000BC the museum you can see a terracotta model of an Ancient Egyptian House Around 2500BC Egyptians built the Great Sphinx and the Great Pyramid at Giza. 2500BC 2500BC to 2000BC was the 'Old Kingdom' period. It was around 1550BC that many of the royal tombs were built in the Valley of the Kings. 1500BC - 332BC 1550BC was the period of the 'New Kingdom'. Around 1325BC, King Tutankhamen was buried in the Valley of the Kings. In 1922 his tomb was discovered, 1325BC inside were wonderful treasures and the mummy of the Pharaoh covered by a beautiful gold death mask.

Egypt was governed by leaders called pharaohs.

Pharaohs came to power through succession; if someones father or mother was the previous pharaoh, then they are next in line for the throne. Although Egypt went through many drastic changes as far as wars and treaties go, Egypt was always ruled by a pharaoh, up until Cleopatra Cleopatra, the last pharaoh.

Akhenaton, Cleopatra, and Tutankhamen.

The early Egyptian empire began when Menes the king from Upper Egypt took over lower Egypt and made it into one and became the first pharaoh and Dynasty. Years later the New Kingdom also known as the Egyptian Empire (1570-1070BC) had begun.

Fall of the Empire


The empire came to an end when the Persian conquest had begun. It was called The Battle of Pelusium, It was fought between Achaemenid Empire and of course Egypt. It was fought near Pelusium in 525 BCE and with this win the Achaemenid empire took the throne of pharaoh. But they governed Egypt as a country. After all this Egypt was not able to gain power and had been conquered by many more countries.

The Battle Of Kadesh: The Egyptian Empire was under the control of Ramesses II. Generally dated to1274 BC this battle is known as one of the earliest recorded battles. Also, it was possible the largest chariot battle (5,0006,000). Later, in 1259 BC, the two Empires signed a treaty that established peace between the two parties. And is known as the oldest WRITTEN treaty (not oldest known). --------------------->

The Great Sphinx and the pyramids of Giza are the most recognizable symbols of ancient Egypt.

Symbolized the unification of the two lands. Writing came along, they have over a hundred symbols that mean a letter, sound & a symbol can serve 2 different purpose.

Pharaohs were drawn & symbolized to show royalty and power.

Building projects were organized and funded for religious but also to reinforce the power of the pharaoh.

The cultural monuments left a legacy. Pyramids and Great Sphinx are a world wonder. Hieroglyphics are one of the most famous texts. Told stories in paintings and pictures. Egypt includes the tale of Moses and God. Egypt armies was the first to create various weapons. Warriors were often chosen to be mummified to protect the pharaoh in the afterlife.
