Week 5
EDCI 5825: Enhancing Classroom Curriculum
with Computers
Concept Attainment Lesson Plan: Physical
Geography
 Background: Hands-on task involving water in its
three physical states: gas, liquid, and solid

 Fundamental to understanding hydrologic cycle

 Hydrologic cycle: understanding the effects of

water changing its state in a constantly recurring
process that varies over space
Background of Concept
 Lesson: Entails teaching students about how water
can transform from one state to another
 Liquid to gaseous state (evaporation)
 Gaseous to liquid state (condensation)
 Gaseous state to solid state (and vice versa)
without going through the liquid state
(sublimination)
Intended Question Strategies
 Students: need to think of their use of water in
every day applications, including at home
 They also need to think of their observations of
water outdoors in its various states
 Weather conditions: water from the atmosphere
reaching the earth/water bodies as rain, snow,
sleet, freezing rain, hail, and fog
Orienting the Students to the Lesson
 Thinking of the natural world around them
 Water: finite level on earth -- can neither be
created nor destroyed; closed loop system
 Comprised of molecules: H2O: two atoms of
hydrogen; one oxygen atom
 Constantly changing states: liquid to gas (or vice
versa), liquid to solid (or vice versa); gas to solid
(or vice versa)
Presenting Data
 Examples: depending on temperature (in degrees
Fahrenheit), water can be at any of its 3 states: solid
(below 32°), liquid (above 32º up to 212º degrees),
gaseous (212º and above)
 First, understanding of water in its three states is critical
toward learning about the hydrologic cycle
 Thus, concept verbally articulated, then applied
 Technology: Use of Webquest:
Webquest
 Created on questgarden.com
 Hyperlink to a “tinyurl” Web site
 Technology will facilitate the learning process
 Students will have access outside of class to utilize
this tool by having the task introduced
 Sufficient background information is provided
 Students can then peruse site for preparation
Task
 Task will entail an experiment of filling an ice cube tray
and a tea kettle

 Kettle will be filled with water: process will involve

observation of water transforming from a liquid to a
gaseous state

 Ice cube tray will entail observing liquid transform to a

solid state
Intended Results
 Exercise will facilitate student learning of water in
its various states, what influences the changes
thereof, etc.
 Once students comprehend water in all its states,
they can then learn about the hydrologic cycle
 Learning of the hydrologic cycle will lead toward
appreciation of the effects of weather on humans
and their activities over space
Building Block Framework
 Learning about water in its states:
 Will lead to assisting with learning about
hydrologic cycle
 Then lead toward understanding the processes that
influence landforms, climates, landscapes, and
human activities
 Students will attain these concepts via teacher-led
instruction and student-based learning
