Instructional Activities (Detailed)

Students will do their assigned stretches and I will take attendance. Stretches are as follows: Neck Rolls, Shoulder Rolls, Arm Circles, Arm Stretches, Trunk Twists, V-Sit Stretch, Pretzel Stretch, Butterfly Stretch, Ankle Rolls Assigned, number of crunches, and push-ups Introduction Catch Students will stand in correct position- feet shoulder width apart, knees bent, arms out in front with a flat platform- and toss the ball to themselves. They will simply freeze when the volleyball hits their forearms (platform). This is to get them used to hitting the volleyball on their forearms rather than their hands or wrists. If this is easy for them, next the students will try and catch the volleyball in between their arms.

Time in Minutes 11-13 Toss, Bump, Catch (alone)
Students will toss the volleyball high enough to themselves so that they can move their feet to get underneath it. They will bump it straight up in the air to themselves and just catch the volleyball. When the student can do this 5 times in a row without dropping the volleyball, they can move onto consecutively bumping the ball to themselves. (Gardner: Intrapersonal)

13-15

Keep it Up (alone) Once the students have completed toss, bump, catch, they can now try and bump the ball to themselves with no catch in between. I will ask questions like How many times can you bump without the ball hitting the ground? Whats your highest number that youve reachedtry to beat it. Once the students have successfully bumped it to themselves at least 5 times in a row without the ball hitting the ground they can move onto passing with a partner. (Gardner: Intrapersonal) Toss, Bump, Catch (partner) Students will toss the volleyball high enough to their partners so that they can move their feet to get underneath it. They will bump it back to their partner and that partner will just catch the volleyball. Repeat five times, so that each person is passing at least five times. (Gardner: Interpersonal)

Keep it Up (partner) Once the students have completed Keep it Up alone, they can try and Keep it Up with a partner. The partners will work together by first trying to just toss, bump catch. Once they have done this the partners will work together to keep the volleyball up by passing to each other consecutively back and forth. I will ask questions like How many times can you bump without the ball hitting the ground? Whats your highest number that youve reachedtry to beat it. (Gardner: Interpersonal) Keep it Up (groups) Students will be split up into two or three groups (depending on class size and skill level). They will stand in a large circle facing one another. They will try to keep the volleyball from hitting the floor by bumping it to each other within the group. After one round Ill have them start to count to see how many times that they can keep it up encouraging at least five times and eventually compare each groups scores for more challenges. (Gardner: Interpersonal)
