Minimum Required Ultrasound Views


FAST exam 1. Cardiac view (subxiphoid or parasternal long axis)
(4 view) ✔ Myocardium and pericardium
2. RUQ
✔ Inferior pole of kidney
✔ Diaphragm
✔ Hepatorenal interface with Morrison’s Pouch
3. LUQ
✔ Diaphragm
✔ Splenorenal interface
4. Pelvis
✔ Bladder interface with prostate, uterus, or rectum
Cardiac exam 1. Subxiphoid four-chamber
(Any two of these views) 2. Parasternal long axis
3. Parasternal short axis
4. Apical four-chamber
Renal exam 1. Transverse view of both kidneys
(5 views) 2. Longitudinal view of both kidneys
3. View of bladder
Gallbladder exam 1. Long axis of gallbladder
(2 views) ✔ Measure common bile duct diameter
✔ Demonstrate portal vein, common bile duct
2. Short axis of gallbladder
✔ Measure gallbladder anterior wall thickness
Aorta exam 1. Proximal- transverse with measurement
(4 views) • Lumbar shadow, aorta, inferior vena cava, superior mesenteric artery
2. Mid- transverse (near level of renal arteries) with measurement
• Lumbar shadow, aorta, inferior vena cava
3. Distal- transverse (between renal aa and bifurcation) with measurement
• Lumbar shadow, aorta, inferior vena cava
4. Longitudinal view of mid-distal aorta
Uterus exam 1. Sagittal view
• Transabdominal ✔ Endometrial stripe, bladder
• Transvaginal 2. Transverse view
(2 views) ✔ Endometrial stripe, bladder
3. If there is a pregnancy:
✔ Estimate age (Gestational sac diameter, fetal pole length, etc.)
DVT Exam 1. Femoral of both sides
(4 views) ✔ Vein and artery with video of compression
2. Poptiteal of both sides
✔ Vein and artery with video of compression
Ocular 1. Globe of both eyes
(2 views) ✔ Anterior chamber, lens, retina, optic nerve
2. Optic nerve of both eyes
✔ Measure diameter
