Where to sh and what to sh for: Bloubergstrand holds more than just the classic view of Cape Town and Table Mountain. In winter when the northwest storms have stirred up the sea and opened new gullies, anglers arrive here to sh for galjoen, which can be found in great numbers and will take white mussel. Its impossible to list the best spots as gully formation is ever changing. Anglers are advised to drive along the beach and look for likely spots, or to ask an old angler. In early summer, silver kob can be caught on pilchard, and there are occasional catches of white stumpnose.

Where to sh and what to sh for: In this area, anglers can head for Boulders Beach, a bay lled with round rocks south of Camps Bay, and try for galjoen during the winter storms or else brave the rocks at Llandudno for galjoen in winter and perhaps silver kob in summer. Offshore anglers can take charter boats from Hout Bay Harbour and head out to the deep to sh for tuna, yellowtail and snoek. Boats also leave from Kommetjie to sh and, in season, to catch rock lobster. The coast towards Cape Point from Kommetjie is mostly rocky with a few bays, and anglers tend to head for the Table Mountain National Park where good catches of galjoen can be made at spots like Gifkommetjie. Diaz Rocks is like Rooikranz, a spinner mans spot for yellowtail.

Unique Opportunities Rock lobster can be dived along this entire coast.

Where to sh and what to sh for: The cliff faces of the spectacular eastern shores of the Table Mountain National Park offer skilled shore anglers the chance of catching yellowtail from the rock ledges of Rooikrans. Bordjiesdrif is a good place to catch hottentot and roman year-round. Yellowtail also make an appearance here. The slipway at Buffels Bay allows anglers with boats to get to spearing and angling spots such as Bellows Rock and Rocky Banks. Here you will nd shoals of yellowtail when they are running, as well as the occasional yellown or longn tuna. These sh are also sought in the Deep Canyons offshore of Cape Point by charter boats that leave from Simons Town. Also to be found are pelagics such as geelbek, skipjack tuna, snoek and dorado. Spearshermen enjoy hunting for white steenbras, silver kob or elf offshore of Millers Point. Kalk Bay Harbour wall is only worth visiting for catching squid. More interesting, after a southeaster in summer, is Baileys Cottage where silver kob and elf can be caught.

This coast also produced the biggest yellowtail caught in False Bay, a monster of 25kg.

Where to sh and what to sh for: The long stretch of beach between Muizenberg and Gordons Bay offers several shing opportunities. White steenbras are often caught on bloodworm right in the corner at Muizenberg. In the summer, between Muizenberg Corner and Macassar, shermen can target white steenbras, silver kob, bronze whalers, diamond stingray and elf. However, this area has become notorious for muggings and attacks, especially on anglers who sh at night or early mornings. It is safer not to go alone. Galjoen and blacktail are caught in winter. Strandfontein runs for about 7km, so consult the locals to nd specic good spots. Anglers may be lucky here and catch large silver kob at high tide in shallow water. Further east, the whole Beespens area as well as Mnandi are very good for silver kob and elf. All along this coast, from the cliffs to the bird sanctuary at Eerste Baai, anglers will nd silver kob and elf and, if shing with the right bait, white steenbras. Swartklip is also known for summer catches of silver kob. Best conditions in this region are after a strong southeast wind on the rst day of northwest wind. The inshore gullies are best shed on the high tide, while at low tide those anglers prepared to wade are able to cast onto the inshore reefs in search of winter galjoen. The angling area between Broken Road and Macassar is well known for catches of galjoen, white steenbras, elf and silver kob. White steenbras and kob are usually caught at night in summer. Galjoen can be caught in winter and occasional runs of belman can occur. No shing is allowed between the Lourens and Eerste rivers. Melkbaai at Strand is a good spot for silver kob, while Harmony is best shed at low tide for silver kob and white steenbras, when anglers can get out to sh from the at rocks just offshore. These rocks are excellent for spinning for elf. Large shoals of leervis appear regularly and are targeted by yshermen. Kayak angling has taken off in this area and many anglers are seen shing off their kayaks in the late afternoon after work.

Where to sh and what to sh for: Gordons Bay has been heavily overshed and anglers must head for the rugged rocky coast towards Rooiels for shing. Beware, though, because this stretch of coastline is notorious for freak waves, and crosses mark the spots where unwary anglers have been swept off the rocks and drowned. To date 80 anglers are known to have lost their lives in this area. In summer, boats leaving from Gordons Bay and Harbour Island harbours can hunt for roman and hottentot. In the evenings a good number of silver kob can be caught off the Harmony coast. Rock angling starts at Platbank and Vogelsteen, which together are part of what is known as the Near-Mountain, and are excellent spots for large silver kob and white steenbras after the rst winter storms in April. Throughout the summer they also produce elf.

Buoy 3, Guns and Boskloof are deepwater spots that can produce geelbek, yellowtail and the odd silver kob. Again, they produce more sh when the sea is reasonably rough after a cold front has passed. Koelbaai beach and the round stones to the north of it are excellent for galjoen during winter, and in summer, particularly in the evenings, large white steenbras may be caught here. Ledges and West Point are probably the deepest spots on this section of coast and in years gone by even produced large red steenbras. Today, however, geelbek and yellowtail can be caught, along with the odd roman and hottentot. All these sites are excellent shark spots, especially for bronze whalers and smooth-hound sharks.

pushing. Blacktail used to be caught here but are now rare. Boats can be launched from Maasbaai and out on the deep reefs you may catch good roman and hottentot through most of the year. In summer after a few days of strong southeast wind geelbek are caught right inside the kelp beds. Shoals of snoek are also a possibility, particularly in Holbaai. In Holbaai is Doringpunt, famous for geelbek. Aasbank is a good spot for galjoen, as is Tom se Klip, on the eastern side of Silver Sands beach. It is also good for white steenbras. Boats launching from Maasbaai and heading out to sea should be wary of the shallow kelp beds which often break if a large swell is running.

Where to sh and what to sh for: The area around the dramatic eastern crag of False Bay, Hangklip, is unshable because of the thick kelp beds that occur here and anglers generally head for Maasbaai, and, starting at the western end, sh from Ospunt, Koppiepiering and Visbaai. Anglers mainly target geelbek in summer, especially during gale-force southeasters. In summer silver kob can also be caught. In winter the focus shifts to galjoen and white steenbras. Visbaai then becomes a hot spot when the tide is

Where to sh and what to sh for: This area of coast has lots of kelp and low rocks interspersed with sandy bays. The Whaling Station with its penguins is a good spot for geelbek and silver kob and between the Whaling Station and Die Been are many gullies for galjoen shing. These gullies change with sea conditions and the tides, so the interested angler must walk along the coast to see what looks best. Kelp, however, can be a problem. Die Been is a good spot to try for geelbek, white steenbras and galjoen. Verwoerd Beach is a sandy beach of about a kilometre, which might see some silver kob in summer and galjoen and white

Jock se Baai is a little further along the coast and is known for silver kob and geelbek. In Kleinmond, Sandown Point is an excellent spot for white steenbras and galjoen. The whole area produces hottentot year-round off the deeper points. Huge shoals of sevengill cowsharks can be found in spots such as Verwoerd Beach, Whaling Station and Jock se Baai.
Unique Opportunities Here, at any of the deep points, the fortunate angler could run into a shoal of yellowtail.

Where to fish and what to fish for: Splash Rock is one of the best-known deep-water points on the KZN South Coast and is an excellent platform to target trophy species such as dusky kob, garrick, king mackerel and back-breaking sharks such as raggedtooth sharks, blacktips, giant sandsharks and more. Good scratching for small fish such as bronze bream is also available both north and south of the main point. Splash Rock is most productive from April through to September, which coincides with the annual shad and sardine runs. A lesser-known spot, Spiros, has all the same species as Splash Rock but sees far fewer anglers; it is a good place to get away from the crowds. It is best fished in a northeasterly wind.

Pondoland Marine Protected Area No offshore fishing is allowed in the area bounded by a line running 128 from the southern head of the Sikombe River, a line running 128 from the northern head of the Mbotyi River and the 1000-m isobaths. No shore-based fishing is allowed along the following four sections of coast: 3110.3S; 03007.5E to 3112.5S; 03005.2E 3115.0S; 03002.9E to 3116.8S; 03001.2E 3117.6S; 03000.6E to 3119.1S; 02958.5E 3125.4S; 02951.2E to 3127.0S; 02945.5E No fishing is allowed in the Mtentu and Msikaba estuaries. Trafalgar Marine Protected Area Only shore angling and fishing for certain pelagic fish is allowed between beacon N1 south of Centre Rocks and beacon N2 opposite the southern boundary of the Mpenjati Resort, extending one nautical mile seawards from the high-water mark.

Unique Opportunities For any serious shore angler wanting to land a trophy king mackerel, Splash Rock is possibly your best bet. The previous SA senior record and the current SA junior record were both caught here in the past five years. December to July are the best times to target these fish. The annual sardine run between June and August can see some frenetic fishing, especially when conditions are favourable and the little fish come within casting distance. Offshore one can target trophy king mackerel or challenge the mighty yellowtail on the wreck. A few charters operate out of Port Edward- see www.ufindsouthcoast.co.za

Biology: A torpedo-shaped fish, silvery-grey but greenish-blue dorsally, tip of dorsal and anal fins white. Black spot on gill cover. Juveniles with six darker bars. Mature at 50cm, spawns inshore in pairs in spring and summer. Maximum size 1m and 15kg. From Margate north and into Indo-Pacific. Typical habitats: Clear water over coral reefs and also sandy bays; juveniles in estuaries. Shoaling during the day, solitary hunting at night. Roaming.

Biology: A large, elongated silver-bodied fish, with a curved lateral line. Matures at 60cm. Mostly spawns off KwaZulu-Natal in spring. May reach 2m and 50kg. Found from the eastern Atlantic and around the coast to Maputo. Typical habitats: Found in small shoals in the wave zone, where it hunts smaller fish. Migratory to Cape provinces in summer and KwaZulu-Natal in winter.
