1,000-mw thermal power plant at Tuticorin

The Neyveli Lignite Corporation and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board have signed an agreement for
setting up a 1,000-mw thermal plant at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu. The Rs 4,000-crore plant will become
operational within four to five years and the power generated will be entirely for the state grid.
According to a state government press release, the capital investment for the project will be contributed in
the ratio of 89:11 by the NLC and the TNEB respectively. As per the MoU, the infrastructure available in
the Tuticorin thermal plant will be utilised for the new project. This was the second joint venture thermal
power plant between a Central power generation undertaking and the TNEB. Last July, NTPC and TNEB
had signed an agreement for setting up a 1,000-mw plant at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore in North Chennai.
