Major historical events relating to the Ying Zheng/Qin Shi Huang and the Qin dynasty:

o 259BCE Ying Zheng was born in the state of Qin, the northwestern part of China. o 246BCE - Ying Zheng was declared king of the Qin who were the most powerful state in China at the time. From here until he turned 21 he ruled with the help of a regent. o 238BCE - Ying Zheng took power in his own right. o 221BCE The Qin, lead by Ying Zheng took control of all the other Chinese states and united them into one kingdom, with Ying Zheng becoming the first Chinese ruler to call himself Emperor and in doing so ended 260 years of wars between the states. By this time he was 38 years old. o 221BCE After establishing control, Ying Zheng renamed himself Qin Shi Huang. o 220BCE Construction of the Great Wall begins to keep the Mongolians out. o 213BCE The policy of burning books and teachings of Confucius begins. o 210BCE Qin Shi Huang died at the age of 49 and was buried in an elaborate tomb containing 7000 life-size terracotta warriors

complete with horses and chariots. o 206BCE Qin dynasty ends and is replaced by the Han dynasty.

How did Qin Shi Huang affect the shi (nobles and officials): o Lived in palaces of their own but sometimes located within emperors palace complex. o Emperors relatives were made noble and given positions of army commanders and wealthy landowners. o Administered laws and managed tax collection. o Boys from these families could afford to be educated. How did Qin Shi Huang affect the nong (farmers): o Paid heavy taxes, which they could barely afford. o All able bodied men were taken from families and farms to serve in the army for 2 years. o Built roads to connect provinces to cities. How did Qin Shi Huang affect the gong (artisans and craftspeople): o All able bodied men were expected to serve in the army for two years. o Common currency, weights, measures and language implemented through out China. o Paid heavy taxes. How did Qin Shi Huang affect the shang (merchants and traders): o o o o Built grand public buildings they could trade from. Paid heavy taxes but could afford it more than most other groups. All able bodied men were expected to serve in the army for two years. Common currency, weights and measures made trading easier.

More things Qin Shi Huang implemented that you may want to try to include: o Planned and began construction of the Great Wall of China o Ordered carts to be built with the same axle to make road travel easier. o Built roads as well as networks of canals to connect to provinces to each other as well as to the city. o Built grand public buildings and places. o Introduced common currency, weights and measures and language.

o United China as one kingdom and divided it into 36 prefectures (regions). o Set up one set of laws to guide all of China. o Banned teaching of Confucius and orders all books and writings that did not support his ideas to be destroyed. o Taxed the people heavily.
