Student Comments (What are your reactions/questions related to the above?) Some observations that I made this week were primarily regarding student engagement in and out of the classroom. One of the first things I noticed was an activity using PowerPoint to help the kindergarten students identify common and less known art tools. If they identified something incorrectly, Mrs. Tollefson would give the correct term to them again. The PowerPoint played on a loop during an art-making activity so that the students would have the opportunity to practice the tool names that they werent used to. (KSD 3.c. Engaging students in learning). For the fifth grade students, Mrs. Tollefson and I had prepared the activity in the morning to make sure that we didnt waste time during class mixing paint and medium for a paste paper lesson. We printed out the lesson plan description handout and had the students read the History and Tools section of the lesson. Then, Mrs. Tollefson and I demonstrated the activity and set a timer to let the students know how much time was remaining before it was time to clean up. (KSD 1.c. Selecting Instructional Goals, KSD 2.c. Managing classroom procedures) Last week Mrs. Tollefson suggested that I bring in my own art to share with the students of all grade levels. I did so, and talked about the process of how and why I used the methods that I did. Mrs. Tollefson also shared art that she had submitted to a contest and how she placed. We also talked about the importance of going to art shows and fairs to meet with other professional artists and talk about their art. (KSD 2.a. Establishing an environment of respect and rapport, KSD 4.e. Growing and developing professionally) Finally, I was able to observe non-classroom activities including lunch duty and a pep rally. Participating in out-of-classroom responsibilities is important because you have an opportunity to see how the students interact with each other differently and to develop a rapport with other staff members. Pep rallies are important to attend and participate in to establish school pride and a sense of community. (KSD 4.d. Contributing to the school and district) Cooperating Teachers Comments (e.g., points covered in conference; strengths noted; areas suggested for study, action, etc.)
