Overall Goal of Lesson: Students will be able to interpret and analyze specific ideas and events from Beowulf while producing textual evidence in order to support their theories as well as discuss various themes and ideas that resonate throughout the epic poem Beowulf.

Instructional Objectives: Students will participate in a seminar/class wide discussion

Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) & ELPS: 110.34 English Language Arts and Reading, English IV 2C- Reading/comprehension of text/theme and genre. Relate characters, setting, and theme to ideas of its time 3-Reading/comprehension of literary text/poetry. 24A-Listening and speaking/listening Listen responsively to a speaker by framing inquiries that reflect an understanding of the content 25- Listening and Speaking/Speaking- Students speak clearly and to the point, formulate sound arguments, eye contact, speaking rate, volume, enunciationto communicate ideas effectively. 26- Listening and speaking/teamwork- work productively in with others in teams. Expected to participate productively, offering ideas or judgments that are purposeful in moving the team towards goals, asking relevant and insightful questions, tolerating a range of positions and ambiguity.

Higher Order Questions: What is this story trying to tell us about society? What is the story about? How is the idea of good vs. evil portrayed throughout the story? How does Beowulf represent the hero archetype? Where do Monsters lurk? What literary devices are present in the poem and what purpose do they serve? Student Activities: (Keep in mind the following: Scaffolding, Independent or Cooperative activities, Groupings, Reading, Writing, Listening, Hands-On/Minds-On, Connections to previous knowledge, etc Scaffolding-Review the hero archetype with students through prezi. Teacher will provide students with a list of questions the day before the seminar for them to answer and discuss during the seminar. Cooperative Activity- Participate in a seminar with entire class to discuss ideas about Beowulf. Teacher will act as a facilitator but let the class lead the discussion. Writing- Students will be taking notes about ideas which stick out to them or any questions they may have. Listening- Students will be respectful and listen quietly as other students speak and respond to each others thoughts and contributions. Students will be making connections with the epic poem/heroes and present day society.

Teacher Input/Lesson Activity: Bellringer Sat questions answer and review Prezi review over Hero Archetype Seminar- group discussion led by the students while teacher acts as a facilitator; students should have the questions they answered in class the previous day that they will use as a resource for discussion Modeling: The teacher will represent what an attentive listener is during the seminar

Guided Practice: Teacher will start the class off with the first question and then turn it over to the class. The teacher will bring the class back together if they begin to stray or get caught up too long on one specific question or become too quiet. Independent Practice: Students will answer each others questions and lead the discussion after the first question is asked by the teacher 5 minutes Lesson Closure: Parody video- a music video which sums up what the story is about, how Beowulf represents a hero, kennings, and alliteration Assessment Methods/Strategies: Participation in the seminar along with the notes they take will act as a major test grade.
