Case Study Hannah Tyler ECD 1414 Wed Evening Winter Semester 2013

Amanda B. is the average, typical growing young princess. She turned four years old on March 24, born in 2009. She is the third child, having an older sister and brother. Her parents, whom reside together in Linden, Michigan, live with her and her siblings. This family of five is very active, always running children to sporting events and fun family adventures. Amanda attends our center full time and has since she was about eighteen months. She began her experience in the infant and toddler room. In fall 2012, she began in my classroom, a three and four year old program. Amanda will also attend my classroom again the next school year. Amanda is the average developing preschooler. She enjoys playing in all areas of the classroom. Youll find her most participating in cooperative and some parallel play. Amanda has shown great development in many cognitive ways, including problem solving. When upset with a friend, she is getting better at using her words. Like all typically developing children, being able to express how you feel during a problem can be difficult at times. As educators, its important to assist when needed. Amanda is doing great on her own solving problems and still needs assistance from time to time. She also using symbolic thought, using her imagination to represent things. For example, she may use a block and pretend its a phone. Amanda is progressing well in cognitive development and continues to progress. I hope to see her problem solving in many other ways. In the social emotional aspect, Amanda is great at noticing feelings in others. If a teacher is upset, she loves to say, I love you, knowing it will brighten us up and fill our buckets. Amanda hugs friends if they are sad and to show she

loves them. She takes care of herself daily with little to no reminders. Washing her hands after the restroom and knowing when she needs a Kleenex are some ways she takes care of herself. Amanda is always building relationships with staff and friends. She normally plays with the same two girls, but branches herself off and plays with other friends as well. When Amanda wakes up from rest, she loves to cuddle me. We spend a few minutes sitting together and this builds our relationship and trust. Amanda occasionally deals with social conflicts. The youre not invited to my birthday party and youre not my friend are common between some of the girls in our classroom. Amanda does well fixing these social conflicts with explaining how she feels, that makes me sad, along with other words, when she is told one of these phrases. Amanda is progressing fantastic in social and emotional ways. Im hoping she has made many friends in our classroom and will continue to grow in expressing herself. Amanda is very active and this is shown in her physical development. She is developing typically in moving in locomotor and nonlocomotor ways. She loves running, jumping, hopping, and skipping. She is increasing her abilities in nonlocomotor ways, bending, swinging her arms and so forth. Amanda pushes dump trucks and other push-able toys, showing that she can move with objects. Amanda also shows creativity in movement, especially when using scarves and dancing. Amanda loves to dance, and enjoys when I spin her around like a princess! I cant wait to see Amanda performing many other nonlocomotor ways and continuing to develop physically.

Amanda has improved tremendously since the beginning of the school year. When she first started in September, her name was written as an A and some letterlike forms of drawing following. Now, as you can see on the example following these pages, she is rocking it! She used to use her nametag to know what order her letters go in and now, she is writing that name so fast with no nametag! On the sample Im also providing, Amanda has shown improvement in explaining what is going on in her picture. She did great sounding out her words and putting down the appropriate letters. She also noticed the drawing of her sister on the back of the paper, saying, Sister is behind me. This is a great spatial concept as well. Amanda is great at describing objects, events and relations. One of the anecdotal notes I provided, Amanda stated, Im gonna put a seed in the grass and go to bed and its dark and itll grow. Then pink blue purple polka dots and itll be a colorful one. She used so much detail in explaining what will happen to her seed. I wish I knew what it grew into that had all those polka dots! Amanda enjoys coming up with rhymes. She loves language in general and Im excited for her to make more drawings with many descriptions. To conclude, Amanda is a wonderful young lady. She has grown so much cognitively, social emotionally, physically and in language. I see bright things in her future, with a love of reading. I recommend that Amanda have continued support in her many areas of development. I hope to see her advancing in math areas and beginning to classify objects. She is developing at a great rate for her age and will continue to surprise me. Thank you to our center and her parents for allowing me to participate in the case study with Amanda.
