Fear of separation or abandonment


intensifies due to their keen imagination that allows them to believe they are being deserted when they are not

Management: Tell the child when you are leaving and when you will be back. Say goodbye to your child briefly. Read books or make up stories with your child about separation fears.

Keep a qelaxed and happy expqession on youq face when you aqe leaving youq child. Avoid cqiticizing youq child oq being negative

To increase your childs feeling of safety, let him take something he loves from home. Settle your child in an enjoyable activity before leaving. If you are leaving your child in a new setting spend time at the new place with your child before the separation occurs.

o f t h e D a r k

The dark is a very real and very common fear for children between this age. Exhausted mothers and fathers are positive there is no monster hiding in the dark room. The child is just as positive as there is something. Just like the parent who looks up the meaning of a word and comes to understand it, a childs fear of the dark can be handled the same way.

Management:
Do stay calm. Dont get frustrated. Do support your child. Dont do sleepovers. Do empower your child. Dont play into the fear of the dark. Do make bedtime soothing.

Fear of Mutilation

Management:

need good explanations of the limits of health care procedures in order to feel safe

Acknowledge childs fears regarding hospitalization Orient to the hospital, spend time with child to build trust Encourage presence of parent if possible and encourage to participate in care. Provide comfort and support.

Nutrition assess food likes (hamburger, sandwich, etc) Give small portions. Make environment comfortable and accept messes. Encourage intake of fluids.

Provide consistent environment Provide with as much mobility as possible Provide play and divisional activities Avoid intrusive procedures as much as possible Assess childs perception by asking to draw a picture and tell about it
