MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar? HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I hypothesized that water will flow into the egg. This is because the concentration of water in vinegar is about 95% and higher than the concentration of water in an egg where about 74% of it is water. Therefore, having water flow into the egg after the 5% acid dissolves the shell and causing the egg to expand. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 150 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13.5 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) Started at 250 300 with egg 300 with egg 200 without egg OBSERVATIONS 4 17.0 290 with egg 190 without Carbon dioxide (bubbles) on eggshell Vinegar displaced 75 ml Dissolved egg shell Foam surrounding the inside of beaker Calcium carbonate made egg feel chalky Yolk could be seen Clearer Calcium carbonate made the egg feel smooth

CONCLUSION In this lab, we investigated the effects of osmosis. After four days, the water molecules flowed into the egg from an area of high concentration into an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane causing the egg to expand 3.5 cm in our group. In comparison to the average of the entire 7th grade expansion, (2.7 cm) our groups expansion had increased in size 0.8 cm more. I

hypothesized that the water would flow into the egg causing it to expand my hypothesis was correct 100% of the time. ANALYSIS 1) The eggshell dissolves when a chemical reaction occurs and the acetic acid (5%) in the vinegar, a weak acid and the calcium carbonate moves across a selectively permeable membrane and mixes with the solution. 2) The difference of expansion between 7th periods groups 3 and 7 was 3.4 cm. Group 3s egg expanded at a rate of 0.88 per day while group 7s egg expanded at a rate of 3.63 per day. The discrepancy in data was perhaps due to the fact that osmosis occurred. After the acetic reaction occurred and the eggshell was gone, a selectively permeable membrane allowed water to pass through. Therefore, the larger egg must have absorbed more water through this membrane. 3) Cells need water because most chemical reactions could not take place without water, it dissolves chemicals that cells need, it keeps the cell temperature from changing rapidly, and it helps a cell keep their size and shape.
