MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I hypothesized that the water from the vinegar would flow into the egg. Since the egg has 74% water and the vinegar has 95% water will flow from the vinegar has higher concentration and the egg has a lower concentration. This will cause the egg to expand. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 3 4 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14.0 15.2 16.5 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 290 295 OBSERVATIONS Bubbles on egg shell 50 mills displacement Little bit of egg shell on top 60 mills displacement Egg grew 2.5 cm. CONCLUSION In this lab we studied the effects of osmosis. After 4 days the water did flow from the vinegar to the egg. Osmosis happened because since the egg is made of 74% water and the vinegar is 94% water it moved through the eggs selectively permeable membrane an area of high concentration (vinegar) to an area of low concentration (egg) causing our groups eggs circumference to grow 2.5cm. Our groups egg expanded 2.5 centimeters and compared to the 7th grades expansion of 2.7 our egg was 0.2cm smaller. ANALYSIS The eggshell dissolved because the vinegar(weak acid) got in contact with the selectively permeable membrane which caused the eggshell(calcium carbonate) to dissolve. The difference in expansion between periods 7 group 3 and 7 are 4.4cm. The rate of group 3s egg is about 1.125 cm per day compared to about .275 for group 7. The discrepancy in data is that group 7s egg might have been bigger than group 3 to begin with. Another thing is that group 3 might have had more vinegar that group 7 might have had. Cells need water because it helps the cell keep its shape, it helps move food and waste around the cell, and it helps make chemical reactions happen in the cell.
