MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow from the vinegar, through the membrane and into the egg. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration, to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. The water from the vinegar is going to flow into the egg because vinegar is 95% water and an egg is 74% water and water flows from an area of high concentration, to an area of low concentration. Also, when an egg comes in contact with vinegar, a chemical change occurs and the shell dissolves. Once the shell dissolves, the membrane is exposed and water from the vinegar can flow freely in and out of the egg. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 3 days and record observations. CONCLUSION In this lab, we modeled osmosis. The water molecules from the vinegar (higher concentration) flowed into the egg (lower concentration) across a selectively permeable membrane. My egg expanded 3 cm proving that the water from the vinegar went into the egg. My egg expanded 0.3 cm more then the average expansion of the 7th grade, which was 2.7 cm. I hypothesized that water molecules from the vinegar would flow into the egg. My hypothesis was correct 100% of the time.

ANALYSIS 1. The eggshell dissolved in the vinegar because vinegar has acetic acid (a weak acid) and an eggshell contains calcium carbonate. The acetic acid attacked the calcium carbonate and a chemical reaction occurred, creating CO2, dissolving the shell leaving only the cell membrane intact. 2. Period 7 Group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days, compared to Group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. The difference, in centimeters, between these two is 3.4 cm. The rate for group 7 was .275 cm per day and the rate for group three was 1.125 cm per day. These groups might have gotten such different results because maybe they measured wrong. Also, another reason they could be different is because maybe one beaker had more vinegar then the other. 3. Water is a necessity in cells for the following reasons. First off, water helps cells keep their size and shape. Secondly, chemical reactions can only happen in the place of water. Thirdly, water helps a cell keep its appropriate temperature. For example, if a cell gets to hot, then water will cool the cell down. Lastly, water dilutes chemicals in the cell. In conclusion, water is a huge necessity for cells.
