Racquel Fox Science 6 October 11, 2013 MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow

when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar? HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I hypothesized that the vinegar would flow into the egg. When the vinegar and the eggshell come in contact, the eggshell dissolves letting the vinegar flow into the egg. Vinegar is about 95% water, which is an area of high concentration, and the egg is about 74% water, which is an area of low concentration. This means that the vinegar would flow into the egg, causing the egg to expand. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 OBSERVATIONS vinegar was displaced 50 mL after the egg was put in Bubbles accumulated on the shell w/o egg water was 250mL egg still had part of shell on egg had some froth on it w/o egg water was 200mL

CONCLUSION In this lab we modeled osmosis by putting an egg in vinegar. When the egg shell came in contact with the vinegar, the egg shell dissolved. That let the water molecules flow from a place of high concentration through the selectively permeable membrane to a place of low concentration, which was in the egg. The water molecules flowing from the area of high concentration to the area of low concentration caused the egg to expand. After 4 days our egg expanded 2

centimeters, which was 1.7 centimeters less than the whole grade average of 2.7 centimeters. I hypothesized that the water molecules would flow into the egg; therefore my hypothesis was correct. ANALYSIS When the egg shell (calcium carbonate) came in contact with the vinegar (weak acid), the egg shell dissolved, which let the vinegar flow from the area of high concentration through the selectively permeable membrane to the area of low concentration. Group 3s egg expanded 4.5 cm in 4 days, while Group 7s egg expanded 1.1 cm. The difference of the two groups is 3.4 cm. Group 3s rate was 1.125 and Group 7s rate was 0.275. The groups got very different results because more water molecules flowed through the selectively permeable membrane in Group 3s egg. Water helps keep the cells shape and keeps everything in order.
