MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg. THEORY: Osmosis is the process of when water molecules go from an area of high concentration through the cell membrane and into an area of low concentration. In my hypothesis I said that if a egg was place in vinegar for four days that water would flow into the egg. I predicted this because vinegar has a higher water concentration then the egg so there for osmosis would occur. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 3 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 2 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13 14.5 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 225 OBSERVATIONS Bubbly and floating 50 ml displace. CONCLUSION In this lab we were testing if eggshells dissolved in vinegar. After three days the shell had completely dissolved and the eggs circumference had grown 3.5 cm. This happened because the water molecules flowed from an area of high concentration through the selectively permeable membrane into an area of low concentration. This process is called osmosis. Our groups egg circumference was 1.1 cm larger the class average of 2.4. My hypothesize of If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg is correct.

ANALYSIS 1. What caused the eggshell to dissolve? The acids in the vinegar break up the eggshell compound into calcium and carbonate elements that then float to the top of the of the vinegar which then reveal the selectively permeable membrane. 2. Period 7 Group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days, compared to Group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. Compare the results of these two groups. What was the difference in expansion? What was the rate (distance/time) of expansion in 4 days? Explain the discrepancy in data. Why did these groups get different results? The reason the groups got different answers is because maybe they had different beakers and the egg was not completely covered so it wouldnt have soaked up as much vinegar as the egg that was completely covered. GROUP # 3 7 PERIOD 7 TOTAL EXPANSION IN 4 DAYS 4.5 cm 1.1 cm

3. Why do cells need water? So they can survive they also help make food for the cell
