Emotion is hard to measure and assess, because each of us is affected in a different way by our emotion. One key question we will explore is to what extent it helps or hinders us in building up an objective picture of the world, and its relationship with reason.

There are six primary emotions: happiness sadness fear anger surprise disgust

Social emotions We have social emotions in the context of our social relationships with others, e.g.: contempt pride embarrassment envy gratitude guilt jealousy shame sympathy. They are affected by our beliefs.

Emotions regarding the future We also anticipate beyond the present so have emotions now about the future, e.g.: worry ambition determination drive passion for a goal (the emotional energy and drive to do things and to create ideas).

Emotions as an obstacle to knowledge Strong emotion can distort other ways of knowing, e.g.: Language slanted, emotional language Reason passionate belief can lead to distorted reasoning/lack of open-mindedness Perception may be blind to certain aspects, e.g. faults

When does it deceive us?

When it prevents us from being objective, or it makes us too sensitive. Can become an obstacle in human relations if it is not mutual. For example, if a person cares for somebody and that somebody doesnt feel the same way, that can be a big problem, because this situation can lead to jealousy, misunderstandings and even hate.

Strong emotions limit the use of the other ways of knowing Perception: we might end up judging differently. Reason: if you are attached to your beliefs too strong, then it can cause lack of openmindedness. Language: emotive language Sometimes people go further EMOTIONAL ABUSE Ignoring, rejecting, isolating, exploiting, insulting, terrorizing We might end up being depressed as a result of our intense emotions.

CONCLUSION
Can we know everything with just the use of emotion? NO. It can provoke the absence of criticism. It can make us too harsh towards a person we dont like. We cannot know the truth. On the other hand, emotions can help us in a situation where we feel that somebody likes or doesnt like us, therefore we know what that person feels for us.

EMOTIONS LIMIT OTHER FACTORS OF KNOWLEDGE! For example, I might be so focused on hating something that I see only the negatives but not positives. It is biased! Changes from person to person. Cannot be used as facts. We cannot think clearly ,Not all emotions can be explained with the use of language. It has wider content. Studies show that without emotions, your life would fall apart. For example, you can narrow down your choices with the use of emotions.
