Teacher ___________________________________ I. Standards: AL.SS.K.35) Develop an awareness of how people are the same and yet different. II. Objectives: The student will understand how their classmates may look different on the outside but, on the inside they are the same by correctly using a KWL chart. III. Introductory Activity: The teacher will introduce the lesson by defining what the word diversity. The definition of the word diversity is the state of being diverse or variety. The teacher will ask the group what they think the definition means. After discussion the teacher will play the Youtube video titles Tell Me Your Story. Today students will be creating a KWL chart on diversity. The students will also be using M&Ms to help them better understand diversity with their classmates. Students will also be drawing a picture of themselves. Now that the students have been introduced to the lesson the teacher and the students will now discuss diversity using a KWL chart. IV. Developmental Activity: The teacher will open the Notebook file KWL Chart and distribute KWL charts to each student. The teacher will play the YouTube video titled Tell Me Your Story. After the conclusion of the video the teacher will ask the students what the students know about diversity at this point and instruct the students to write the statements in the K column of the KWL chart handout. The teacher will assist the students by writing the statements on the SMART Notebook KWL chart. After completion of the K column on the KWL chart the student will be instructed to put I their desk. At this point the teacher will distribute three M&M candies to each student along with a moist paper towel. The teacher will explain to the students that there are three different colored M&M candies in front of them and that the M&Ms represent the group. Once the student understands that the M&Ms are all different colors and that they represent the group. The teacher will now instruct the students to pick up their moist paper towels. Once the student has their paper towel the teacher will instruct the student to wipe the color off of each M&M. Once the student is finished wiping the color off of all of the M&Ms the teacher will ask What happened to the M&Ms? After a few responses from the students the teacher will re-inform the students that these different colored M&Ms represent us. The teacher will explain that we are all different colors on the outside but on the inside we are all the same. The teacher will inform the student

that on the inside of each one of us there are feelings and they can be hurt just like yours can. Now, the teacher will ask the group: what else do we want to know about diversity? The teacher will instruct the students to pull back out the KWL handout and the teacher will reopen the SMART Notebook KWL. The teacher and student will fill out the W column on the KWL chart together. After the K and the W columns are filled in the student will return the chart in their desk until needed for assessment. After completion of this activity the student will now be given a piece of white copy paper.

V. Culminating Activity: The Teacher will distribute white copy paper to the group. The student will draw a self-portrait of them and make sure to color their skin the correct color. The teacher will assist the student on picking the correct skin color if needed.

VI. Assessment (Formal) After the students have been working on their self-portrait for a couple minutes the teacher will call three students at the time to come over to the teacher table and complete the L column on the students KWL chart. When the student finishes the KWL chart with the teacher the chart will be turned in. After every student has been assessed then the teacher will review the L column on the SMART KWL chart.

VII. Modifications for Special Needs: Modifications for this lesson are as followed: The student who has self-control issues will be seated with calm students and/or the teachers desk. The students who work a little slower will be given extra time if available. The student with vision issues will be accommodated for by seating the student closer to the board. The student will also be reminded to bring and wear her glasses daily. The special needs student will be assisted with the help of his aid.

VIII. Resources Resources and supplies needed for this lesson are as followed: computer with SMART Notebook software and internet access, SMART notebook file Lesson KWL Chart, SMART board with markers and eraser, projector, KWL chart worksheet, daily journal worksheet, M&M candies, paper towels, white copy paper, crayons and pencils.

IX. Self-Reflection: Self-refkection questions are as followed: What worked well, what would I change about the lesson, did I spend too much time on this lesson, and what would I change?

X. Alternate Activity (Plan B) In case a student finishes early, the student will be given a daily journal page and instructed to draw and write about what was learned in this lesson. In the event of technology failure, the KWL chart will be completed on the whiteboard and the teacher will explain and discuss the YouTube video. The rest of the lesson will continue as specified.
