IMPLEMENTATION PLAN FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR UNIVERSITY FACULTY

Objective: One of Azusa Pacific Universitys Cornerstones is Scholarship. Which means that APU is committed to teaching excellence (apu.edu/about/cornerstone/) and in part of teaching excellence, each faculty member is required to continue learning. Professional development (PD) is essential in this undertaking and this implementation plan was created not only for the benefit of the educator, but also for the benefit of the university as a whole. Three goals that will be addressed in this plan are as follows: flipping faculty meetings, creating incentive plans for faculty who complete three or more PD modules, and building a sustainable & accessible training module for faculty to access. The flipped faculty meeting is innovative, but due to schedule conflicts this alternative way of conducting faculty meetings will be essential (Caramanico, 2013). Creating short 10 to 15 minute videos with the meetings agenda will open opportunities for more in depth discussions during the face-to-face faculty meetings. This will also encourage more active participation from its faculty members. Even though having an incentive might not be the key reason for completing any training module, I believe that incentives encourage faculty to further their lifelong learning. Kamata & Bower, in their research, found that intrinsic motivations were a greater influence than monetary incentives. It is to my understanding that faculty members consider any training as beneficial not only to their teaching, but they view training as a way of advancing their careers.

In 1997, President Clinton stated that every classroom in American must be connected to the information super-highway, with computers and good software, and well-trained teachers (Schrum, 1999). In 2013, APU has encouraged their faculty members to continue their PD by opening up opportunities to learn online. Azusa Pacific University supports the efforts of their faculty to become well-trained educators. That is the reason why it is important to implement faculty training modules. Timeline for each goal: Flipping Faculty Meetings : By the start of the Spring 2014 semester Faculty Incentives ( for faculty members who complete 3 or more modules): Start of the 2014 2015 academic year (Fall 2014) Implementing the faculty training modules: Fall 2013

Action Plan: Flipping Faculty Meetings o Upon obtaining the agenda for the faculty meeting create an outline for potential areas of discussion. o From that outline gather information and formulate a presentation ( Vimeo or Youtube) that would enhance the agenda items. o Make this presentation available to educators one week before the faculty meeting. o Allow faculty to participate by asking them to email suggestions, articles or videos that they would like to share with their colleagues.

o Communicate important timelines. o This is an opportunity to survey faculty members needs (SurveyMonkey or Google Doc form). o Add links to apps and easy-to-use tools to simplify the access to technology for the faculty members. o Focus on making the video presentation accessible, relevant and worthwhile. o Obtain feedback from the faculty members about the meeting. Faculty Incentives o Create a proposal demonstrating the need of encouraging faculty to participate in technology training. o Create a tiered incentive plan that will fit within the schools budget. o Create a training module that can be seen by the Dean and Provost. o Demonstrate the importance of faculty learning. Use resources, references and statistics to state the facts and demonstrate the long-term results of PD. o Once it is approved create a budget account for the incentives. o Follow-up with Dean and Provost every academic year with statistics concerning the incentive program and the results of the PD. o Create surveys and questionnaires for faculty so that they can give suggestions on how to improve the incentive plan. Faculty Training Modules: o Survey faculty to gauge what they are interested in learning about technology. o From the survey create training modules.

o Create modules in several formats in order to accommodate different learning styles. Blog: For those who like to read Podcast: For audible learners Online Videos (YouTube, Vimeo or Animoto): For visual learners Online Modules (Sakai): For those who those who are tactile learners

o Offer face to face brown bag lunch training sessions. o Create a system of troubleshooting or point-of-reference in order for faculty to have someone to assist them if questions arise. o After completing the modules send out evaluations so that faculty can share their thoughts about the training modules. o Create a spreadsheet of all the faculty members and keep track of all the training modules that each one completes.
