Topic: Novel study Jetty Rats; visualisation activities Specific Objectives/Learning Goals: At the end of this lesson, students should be able to: Demonstrate an ability to visualize setting by creating a map of Hunters caravan park. Prior Learning: have read up to Chapter 13 in their novels. Resources/Materials required: Jetty Rats by Phillip Gwynne, map of caravan park, page references for seting, A3 paper, textas

Lesson Steps
Time: 1 min Procedure 1. Introduction Ask them to take a seat and take a pen out of their bags. Call roll. 2. Teacher Input Today were going to look at visualizing the setting in a novel. Ask students to get out their novels and turn to chapter 9. Read chapter 9 to students and ask them to follow along. Think-aloud to students while I am reading to point out elements of the setting. As we have seen, Hunter lives in a caravan park. Ask students if they have even been to a caravan park before. Show a map on the board of an example of a caravan park layout and point out relevant items on the map. 3. Learning Activities Let students know that they will be designing their own map of Hunters caravan park, based on what we have learnt so far in the novel. Ask for volunteers to hand out A3 sheets of paper and page reference sheets. Let students know they have the rest of the class to finish this. Five minutes before the end of the lesson ask for a few students to explain their maps to the class. 4. Conclusion We can see how important it is to visualize the setting and characters while were reading the novel so we can have a richer picture of what is happening in the story. We can also see from this activity that no two people will see the same novel in exactly the same way. This is because the way we view a novel is coloured by our own knowledge and experiences.
